MIDDLEBURY — Poet Philip Levine mentored scores of aspiring wordsmiths during the 1980s as a faculty member of Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.

Levine, now 83, will return to the nationally renowned, 10-day conference in Ripton on Thursday, Aug. 18 — this time with a different role and some loftier credentials.

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington last Wednesday announced Levine as the nation’s new Poet Laureate for 2011-2012.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday formally approved a warning for a Sept. 27 vote on whether the town should spend $250,000 to further refine plans for a major makeover of the town’s two fire stations.

The Sept. 27 vote will be a precursor to a $4.875 million bond referendum to pay for replacement of the East Middlebury fire station and a substantial renovation and expansion of the department’s headquarters on Seymour Street.

MIDDLEBURY — Some say that artistry runs in the family. If that’s true, then it may be that Weybridge resident Lisa Coale has inherited a keen artistic eye from her grandfather Richard Niebuhr of Middlebury.

Connoisseurs of art can decide for themselves — the two will have their art featured side-by-side at Otter Creek Custom Framing on Friday as part of this month’s Middlebury Arts Walk. Coale’s acrylic paintings and Niebuhr’s photography will be on display from 5-7 p.m.
