Salmon tries to 'shine light' on Vt. finances

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Calculators, pens, pencils and computers are common tools of the trade among auditors.

Vermont State Auditor Thomas Salmon said he uses an extra, figurative tool in his arsenal: A spotlight.

“You’ve got to have a guy like me that wants to facilitate turning the lights on,” Salmon, who is running for re-election this Nov. 2, said during a Monday interview at the Addison Independent.

The 47-year-old Republican from St. Johnsbury faces opposition from Doug Hoffer of Burlington, who defeated former state Auditor Ed Flanagan in a Democratic primary contest in August.

Hoffer looks to align policy with the facts

MIDDLEBURY — Doug Hoffer, Democratic candidate for state auditor, has based his campaign on two principles: asking tough questions of government and state policies, and making sure the numbers cited in studies and reports — as well as those used by the Legislature and political leaders — contain the full picture of any issue, not just a slice of the pie to favor one political perspective over the other.

MIDDLEBURY — When Bill McKibben and his 350.org team planned the 10/10/10 global work party/rally, they envisioned many smaller events cropping up in communities all over the world in place of the gigantic gathering of 2009.

But on Sunday, those small, sustainability-themed events really added up, said the Ripton resident and chief organizer.

MIDDLEBURY — Sas Carey is still recovering from her summer vacation. MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont’s senior senator, said if re-elected next month he will continue to work to secure a waiver for Vermont to enact more sweeping health care reforms sooner than the 2017 timeline mandated under current federal law.

“The way the law is written almost begs for some areas of experimentation, provided you still have the basic health protections that were written into it,” the Middlesex Democrat said during a recent interview at the Addison Independent.

For their part, seniors for the third straight year were testing their sense of community and charity — and by most accounts they were getting the highest of marks.

COLCHESTER — Republican Brian Dubie and Democrat Peter Shumlin brought their respective campaigns for governor squarely before the statewide media on Sunday, Oct. 3, in debate sponsored by the Vermont Press Association at St. Michael’s College.

The debate — the first of only two this campaign season featuring participation of the minor party candidates — gave the two political heavyweights an opportunity to tout their priorities and also throw some more leather in what has become one of the most negative campaigns in recent Vermont electoral history.

MIDDLEBURY — For Middlebury College Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Victor Nuovo, retirement meant time to get down to business.

Nuovo has undertaken several projects since opting for early retirement 16 years ago, including joining the Middlebury selectboard, writing a series of eight essays for The Addison Independent on Plato’s “The Laws” this past spring and researching and writing various books and articles on 18th-century philosopher John Locke.
