Agri-Mark seeks new discharge permit, group questions past violations

MIDDLEBURY — Agri-Mark Inc. is seeking a permit from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources that would allow it to increase the amount of wastewater it discharges from its Exchange Street cheese plant in Middlebury.

While company and town officials say improvements at the plant will benefit them both by evening out discharges to the local water treatment plant, an outside group is raising questions about Agri-Mark’s environmental record.

Open house to be held at Omya quarry Oct. 19

MIDDLEBURY — Omya Inc. will host a free open house at its Middlebury Quarry on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on at the open-pit quarry, buses will shuttle visitors into the quarry while expert guides detail history, drilling, blasting and land reclamation operations. People can ride through the entire tour or disembark from the bus to take an up-close look at geological formations and scout the area for a marble souvenir.

Middlebury's Short Stop gas station pitches new car wash

MIDDLEBURY — Owners of the Middlebury Short Stop at 220 Court St. are seeking permission to build a two-bay car wash on the gas station property next The Centre shopping plaza.

Jolley Associates would locate the new car wash behind the existing gas station store, in place of a 950-square-foot truck refueling canopy currently on site. The plan would also require moving an existing dumpster and storage shed onto an island east of the proposed car wash building, according to a project narrative that Jolley has filed with the town.

Jennings and Ponder bring "Vampire Princess" alive

MIDDLEBURY — Storytellers Tim Jennings and Leanne Ponder perform their new program of eerie traditional folk tales and music, “The Vampire Princess,” at Ilsley Library in Middlebury on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m.

The Montpelier Times Argus called the show “rich entertainment: riveting, macabre, and very funny.” Seven Days said it was “a delight to watch” and identified the performers as “Vermont treasures.”

New cider facility going up quickly

MIDDLEBURY — Construction has hit a fever pitch on Vermont Hard Cider’s new, 100,000-square-foot headquarters off Middlebury’s Exchange Street, leaving company officials confident the new facility — to feature new office, manufacturing and warehouse space along with a visitors’ center — will be completed as scheduled by next spring or early summer.

“The work has been steady; there have been no real setbacks,” said Nate Formalarie, spokesman for Vermont Hard Cider (VHC).

Middlebury board endorses tunnel option

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday formally endorsed the concept of a concrete tunnel to replace the Main Street and Merchants Row railroad underpasses and agreed to retain Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. to take the project through the engineering phase.
