MIDDLEBURY — Susan Borg and Richard Nessen have already made an impact on education in the Middlebury area. Borg founded the Quarry Hill School in 1974, while Nessen helped establish the Bridge School in 1980. Both have placed a premium on teaching to individual students rather than trying to tailor subject matter to a large class.

It is a successful technique they would like to see passed on. But change in the education field rarely comes overnight.

East Middlebury residents critical of proposed flood zone

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is seeking some changes in a proposed zoning designation for an area along the Middlebury River following an outcry from East Middlebury residents who contend the new zone will limit development and hurt their property values.

The planning commission began working on the proposed zoning amendments in 2010, following a Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) review by the town’s administration of its flood hazard area regulations under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Hard Cider Company announced today that it will delay the start of construction on a new $24 million cidery until 2013. VTHCC had hoped to begin construction at a site on Exchange Street in Middlebury this summer but officials said the permitting, engineering, design and bidding process has taken longer than expected.

VTHCC is nearing completion of these preliminary hurdles, they said. However, to start a project of this magnitude and scope just as the ground is beginning to freeze could further complicate construction budgets and timetables.

MIDDLEBURY (AP) — A proposed $32 million rail spur that would be used to alleviate truck traffic between marble processor Omya Inc.’s quarry in Middlebury and its calcium carbonate plant in Pittsford has been put on hold indefinitely.

Given the sluggish economy and cost of the project, the company and Vermont Rail Systems are not pursuing it, said Omya plant manager Jim Stewart.

MIDDLEBURY –– Attending college close to home has its ups and downs. One positive, according to two Middlebury Union High School grads who now attend Middlebury College, is saving quarters.

“I can get free laundry,” said Ethan Roy, a 2011 MUHS graduate who attends college a little more than a mile from home.

Roy and MUHS classmate Katie Ritter, both 19, jokingly cited going home for laundry as a plus among many other reasons why they enjoyed going to college in their hometown.
