MIDDLEBURY — Tully & Marie’s will reopen on May 1 with new owners who will soon give the downtown Middlebury restaurant a new menu and a new name.

Cornwall residents Craig Goldstein and Chris English early this week officially acquired Tully & Marie’s at 7 Bakery Lane from previous owners Laurie Reed and Carolyn Dundon. Plans call for them to make some minor renovations to the building and reopen as Tully & Marie’s on May 1, then transition to a new menu and moniker — “Jackson’s on the River” — on June 1.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College last week acquired Addison House, a historic building on College Street in Middlebury, and plan to convert it into office space.

The previous owners of the building in February announced plans to shut its doors as a senior care facility. After 25 years in the senior care business, the owners approached Middlebury College as a potential buyer. Last week, college administrators closed the deal on the $700,000 building.

The organization will now turn its attention to finding another, low-cost building lot so volunteers can get started on home number six. John Jefferies, chairman of the HHAC board, said the organization is exploring some potential house lots in Vergennes and Cornwall.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Fewer than 20 Middlebury voters met on Wednesday, April 14, to support a proposed 2010-2011 ID-4 budget of $5,771,990 and a plan to spend up to $191,100 on pavement and drainage upgrades to the Mary Hogan Elementary School grounds.

Approximately 18 local voters attended the annual meeting held at the school, a gathering that lasted around an hour, ID-4 school board Chairwoman Lucy Schumer said. During that time, school officials and engineers fielded various questions about the budget and project, respectively.

MIDDLEBURY — “This chair is leaning slightly to the left,” said state Sen. Peter Shumlin (D), waiting for a replacement on the stage of Middlebury College's Dana Auditorium last Sunday. “But so do I.”

His statement garnered a laugh from the audience gathered for a debate between the five democratic gubernatorial candidates for August’s primary elections. Though it was a sunny, warm afternoon, the candidates spoke to a full auditorium — more than 200 townspeople, college students and local politicians filled the space.

MIDDLEBURY — A good theatrical performance, local playwright Dana Yeaton believes, should massage audience members.

“If the touch is too light, when they go home, they don’t feel any different, and it’s not that nice,” Yeaton said. “The good massage is the one that gets into those spots and it takes you right to your threshold… The fun of it is being effective.”

Symposium highlights student research

MIDDLEBURY – Where can you find solar houses, glass blowing, analyses of the Chilean health care system and old wooden trapping boats?

Students will be doing presentations on all of these — and more — this Friday at the Middlebury College Spring Student Symposium.

To be fair, the solar house won’t be on display, since it isn’t built yet. But building plans for the house will be on display all day at the symposium, an event that gives students a chance to present projects they have been doing to the wider community.
