Middlebury's tax rate goes down

MIDDLEBURY — Receiving a property tax bill is never fun. But Middlebury residents who opened their fiscal year 2017 property tax bills last week found reason to smile a little bit, upon learning they will be paying a little less than they did last year.

Thanks to some slightly larger-than-expected growth in the town’s grand list and some tight school budgets, residential property taxpayers will be assessed at a rate of $2.786 per $100 in property value, representing a 3.9-cent decrease from last year’s rate of $2.8251.

Learn about the history of bicycling at Sheldon museum talks

MIDDLEBURY — Vintage bicycle collector and cycling historian Glenn Eames will present four gallery talks about the exhibit “Pedaling Through History: 150 years of the Bicycle, The Glenn Eames Collection at the Sheldon Museum.” The talks will take place on Wednesdays, July 27, Aug. 17 and Oct. 5 at noon, and on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.

Middlebury officials backing downtown master plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on July 12 agreed to support the planning commission’s quest for a grant to help create a master plan for downtown Middlebury. It’s a document that supporters believe would lead to more careful and structured growth in an area of the community that has seen a lot of change recently, and is being sized up for more.

Porter seeking public opinion on its future

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s board has launched a community conversation including community forums and an online questionnaire as part of their strategic planning process regarding the future of Porter and health care delivery in our community.

According to Porter spokesperson Ron Hallman, the medical center is strongly encouraging members of the community to be a part of the forward-looking strategic planning process now underway to ensure the community continues to have access to high quality health care services for years to come.

Secrets of the time capsule to be revealed next week

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday, July 26, will open the time capsule recently found in the old municipal gym. And the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the new municipal building might include a person who was present when the mystery box was first secreted in the southeast cornerstone of the gym back in 1939.

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the most beautiful flowers can bloom in the darkness.

Klara Calitri will show you.

Just give her some paint and a brush and her fragile, diminutive, 93-year-old hands will send water lilies floating across the canvass and help some scarlet geraniums stretching toward the sky. She’ll give them friends, such as a contemplative cat or some determined dragonflies.

Vermont Coffee spills onto the stage

MIDDLEBURY — Coffee and theater enthusiasts can now blend their two passions at a single address — 1197 Exchange St., where Vermont Coffee Co. (VCC) has just opened its new playhouse.

The new playhouse is the brainchild of longtime local thespian Deb Gwinn and her husband, VCC founder and CEO Paul Ralston. 

Members of Addison County’s thriving arts community are already familiar with the investments that Ralston and Gwinn have made in the local theater scene.

College's chief financial officer heading to Tulane

MIDDLEBURY — After 13 years as chief financial officer and head of operations at Middlebury College, Patrick Norton has accepted the position of chief operating officer at Tulane University in New Orleans. Norton has been an active member of both the Middlebury College and town communities, serving as a long-time member of the Porter Medical Center board.

Laurie L. Patton, president of Middlebury College, announced Norton’s departure in late May to college faculty and staff, thanking him for his contributions over the years.
