Porter names N.C. executive as medical center's next president

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center today announced that a long-time hospital executive from North Carolina will succeed James L. Daily as president of the Middlebury organization. Daily will retire this spring after 31 years in his role.

Greg’s still open; still no word on store's future

MIDDLEBURY — Greg’s Meat Market was open for business Monday, March 30 — albeit with a small staff working among store aisles with severely depleted shelves.

The Independent tried to reach current Greg’s co-owner, Bart Litvin, by phone this morning. Litvin’s voice mail would not accept new messages. An auto reply from Litvin’s email last week said he would be out until March 26.

Middlebury man creates popular comic book

MIDDLEBURY — By day, Jeremy Holt can often be found troubleshooting computers at Middlebury-area public schools.

By night, he creates superheroes that can be seen in his original comic books that are gaining a national and even international following.

Holt, 32, began writing comic books almost seven years ago.

“I kind of fell into it by accident,” he said.

Police explain Durst's possible link to missing Middlebury College student

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police said an unsolicited phone tip in 2012 about Robert Durst’s past ownership of a now-defunct local health food store led them to consider the New York real estate scion’s link to a Middlebury College student who disappeared in 1971 after having purchased some dried prunes at Durst’s business.

Meanwhile, the Addison Independent has learned that Durst lived in Ripton during his brief residency in Addison County, and the newspaper is reaching out to local people who knew him.

MIDDLEBURY — News of the arrest on March 15 of New York City real estate heir Robert Durst on a first-degree murder charge is reverberating to Middlebury, where Durst owned and operated the health food store “All Good Things” in the early 1970s.

Middlebury police are making note that this was around the same time that Middlebury College student Lynne Schulze disappeared on Dec. 10, 1971.

Alvarez to give college commencement address; Weybridge principal Johnston also honored

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College on Thursday announced that poet, writer and alumna Julia Alvarez will deliver this year’s commencement address. The institution will also bestow an honorary degree upon an Addison County elementary school principal at its May 24 graduation ceremony.
