Middlebury board supports cold weather shelter

MIDDLEBURY — At their Tuesday meeting, the Middlebury selectboard unanimously agreed to support the effort by the social services agency Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) to secure state grants to help perpetuate the local cold weather shelter.

HOPE and leaders of the Charter House Coalition planned the shelter, which the Memorial Baptist Church hosted this past winter.

College students turn HOPE fundraiser into an economic experiment

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College course in economics has enlightened more than a dozen students on the subject of philanthropy and paid some nice financial dividends for a local nonprofit that serves Addison County residents in need of food, shelter and clothing.

Pipeline hearing set for June 12 at MUHS

Middlebury's Marquis Theater plans expanded food offerings

MIDDLEBURY — Marquis Theater owner Bill Shafer hopes to reinvigorate Middlebury’s vintage movie house with a series of improvements that would include expanding food and beverage offerings, revamping two of the three screening areas to create more casual seating, and staging more live entertainment.

“I can’t survive anymore just serving Hollywood,” Shafer said of the theater’s current emphasis on screening major, new-release films.

Fire strikes Vermont Soap Co. building in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — State and local fire officials remain uncertain as to what triggered a Wednesday evening blaze that did substantial damage to the production area at Vermont Soap at 606 Exchange St. in Middlebury

David Shaw, assistant chief of the Middlebury Fire Department, said he and other firefighters were returning from a call in the Stonegate Drive area at around 9 p.m. on June 4 when they received reports of smoke emanating from the Vermont Soap building.

Perine set to retire as Middlebury bank CEO

MIDDLEBURY — When G. Kenneth Perine joined the National Bank of Middlebury in 1987 as a vice president and residential mortgage lender, he thought he had found his perfect career perch.

“It was all I expected,” Perine said during a recent interview. “I just wanted to work for the hometown bank.”

Eventually the Middlebury native found that he would not only work for it, he would lead it.

Middlebury to host free lunch site

MIDDLEBURY — We’ve all heard the old saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

Well, children and teens (ages 2 through 18) who find themselves in Middlebury this summer will have access to free lunch regardless of their resources, thanks to new household income demographics that allow Addison County’s shire town to finally meet federal guidelines as a summer meal site.

Espresso bar to share Main Street storefront

MIDDLEBURY — There’s something new brewing at the vacant storefront at 58 Main St. in Middlebury that formerly housed Clementine.

The space will soon become home to an espresso bar to be operated by Burlington-based Cursive Coffee, along with a new business called Boo & Roxy that will be headquarters to local architect and designer Anne Barakat and her husband, Jon Craine, a production designer and art director.
