Bread Loaf construction project earns green building award

MIDDLEBURY — Bread Loaf Corp. of Middlebury and Hypertherm Inc. of Hanover, N.H., have announced that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Hypertherm’s Heater Road facility in Lebanon, N.H., with a LEED Gold designation. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and represents the best in class green building practices measuring the design, construction, maintenance and operations of green buildings.

Bingham seeks fourth three-year term on Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Craig Bingham hasn’t shied away from the public spotlight during the past year, whether it be challenging the board’s policy on maintaining executive session material or speaking out against a proposal to build new town offices and a recreation center.

He will soon learn whether his positions have resonated with voters. Bingham is seeking another three-year term on the selectboard in one of the most hotly contested Middlebury elections in years.

Freidin stresses public participation in run for Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — John Freidin had been content to stay on the political sidelines since his last run for the Vermont House 15 years ago.

He’s now ready to jump back into the fray — as a Middlebury selectman. Freidin is one of eight residents in the running for a total of three spots on Middlebury’s top legislative panel that are up for grabs on March 4.

Zeoli, LaFiandra vie for interim selectboard position

MIDDLEBURY — In addition to approving the 2014 town meeting warning, the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday accepted the nominations of residents Ann LaFiandra and Chris Zeoli to fill a short, interim stint on the selectboard.

The vacancy was created by the Jan. 2 resignation of Selectman Victor Nuovo.

Public to remember Pete Seeger at Saturday gathering

MIDDLEBURY — A community gathering to remember and celebrate the life of the folk singer and freedom fighter Pete Seeger will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society. Seeger died Monday night in New York City at the age of 94.

Shire town's warning features roof, bridge and building bonds

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday approved a 2014 town meeting warning that will ask voters to make substantial investments in some of their community’s key buildings and bridges.

The marquee items on the 10-article warning relate to plans to build a new Middlebury municipal building and recreation center.

MIDDLEBURY — Steven Hauschka looks not so different from everybody else in the Middlebury College class of 2007 facebook. Sandwiched between Casey Harwood and Tristan Hayes, Hauschka’s photo shows a fresh-faced kid from Needham, Mass., who had come to Middlebury to get a first-class education and play soccer.

Career Center budget cuts building trades program

MIDDLEBURY — Voters in 17 Addison County towns on March 4 will vote on a proposed 2014-2015 Patricia Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) budget of $3,419,913, representing a 2.73-percent cut in spending that will call for elimination of the center’s building trades program as well as downsizing of the school’s administration.

Refrigerant leak sends four to hospital

MIDDLEBURY — A refrigerant leak from a cooling system at Hannaford Supermarket in Middlebury released a gas that caused at least four employees to become ill and also prompted the store to close for most of Thursday morning, Jan. 23, according to emergency responders that included members of a state Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team.
