After escape from the Third Reich, local artist lets her artwork bloom

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the most beautiful flowers can bloom in the darkness.

Klara Calitri will show you.

Just give her some paint and a brush and her fragile, diminutive, 93-year-old hands will send water lilies floating across the canvass and help some scarlet geraniums stretching toward the sky. She’ll give them friends, such as a contemplative cat or some determined dragonflies.

Vermont Coffee spills onto the stage

MIDDLEBURY — Coffee and theater enthusiasts can now blend their two passions at a single address — 1197 Exchange St., where Vermont Coffee Co. (VCC) has just opened its new playhouse.

The new playhouse is the brainchild of longtime local thespian Deb Gwinn and her husband, VCC founder and CEO Paul Ralston. 

Members of Addison County’s thriving arts community are already familiar with the investments that Ralston and Gwinn have made in the local theater scene.

College's chief financial officer heading to Tulane

MIDDLEBURY — After 13 years as chief financial officer and head of operations at Middlebury College, Patrick Norton has accepted the position of chief operating officer at Tulane University in New Orleans. Norton has been an active member of both the Middlebury College and town communities, serving as a long-time member of the Porter Medical Center board.

Laurie L. Patton, president of Middlebury College, announced Norton’s departure in late May to college faculty and staff, thanking him for his contributions over the years.

Time capsule found in cornerstone of old Middlebury town gym

MIDDLEBURY — Though it is being razed to oblivion, the old municipal gym at 94 Main St. continues to give up some secrets and surprises. The latest: A small time capsule that had been tucked into a cornerstone of the 1939 structure, which provided a recreational hub for generations of Middlebury-area students and adults.

A story made for film - A student filmmaker returns to shoot dog sled racer's quest

MIDDLEBURY — In his second year as a student at Middlebury College, Tommy Hyde took a film class that required students to spend a month with a local who was doing something “interesting.” Hyde found Doug Butler, full-time dairy farmer and dog sled racer.

Upon meeting Butler, Hyde was sure he had discovered true, old-school Vermont.

“Soon I found myself on the back of a sled ripping around trails behind this long-haired, wide-eyed, crazy, kooky old Vermonter,” he said.

MIDDLEBURY — Many of those who visit the Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Community Services Center on Boardman Street in Middlebury are looking for help in paying utility, heating, rent and medication bills. Others line up for free food and leads on jobs and affordable housing.

But an increasing number of folks are making a beeline to the HOPE headquarters in search of something else: Bargains, on a variety of items ranging from shoes to jewelry.

Middlebury downtown eyed for master plan

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury planning officials are recommending that the town design a master plan for its downtown in order to better coordinate future development in an area that has already undergone the construction of a new municipal building and will face more major changes — a new public park and a disruptive rail bridges project.

It’s a planning process that officials acknowledge could take more than a year and thus could affect the timing of a major economic development project slated for the heart of downtown.
