Emergency overdose kits offered free to public

MIDDLEBURY — The Turning Point Center of Addison County in Middlebury is distributing free Narcan emergency kits to people seeking to have the substance handy for a friend or loved one at risk of overdosing on opiates.

Middlebury to host last Arts Walk of the season today

MIDDLEBURY — The 2014 Middlebury Arts Walk season finale will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. Middlebury Arts Walk is a free event (for artists, venues, and attendees) and is held the second Friday of the month from May to October. In many cases the art is on display all month long — not just that evening.

New Arts Walk Artists

The Middlebury Arts Walk committee endeavors to introduce new and different artists throughout the season. There are several artists who are first-time Arts Walk exhibitors this month:

Foundation given tennis facility as a gift

MIDDLEBURY — One of the state’s premier philanthropic foundations on Wednesday announced that it will take ownership of the Middlebury Indoor Tennis facility.

Officials at the Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury said the gift by MIT founders David and Eleanor Ignat will enable the VCF to further its goal of serving the community — in particular by expanding efforts to improve the physical health of individuals in the community.

Shumlin appoints Holmes to state health care board

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin appointed Jessica Holmes, a Middlebury College professor of Economics, including Health Economics, to serve on the five-member Green Mountain Care Board. She will serve a six-year term, replacing outgoing member Karen Hein of Jacksonville, Vt., whose term expired.

MIDDLBURY — Zach Bechhoeffer is only 18, but he can already lay claim to being a visionary of sorts. It was in 2011 when Bechhoeffer, then a Middlebury Union High School freshman, called for creation of an electronics club at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center.

Middlebury putting 'charge' into Mill Street parking lot

MIDDLEBURY — Finding a parking space in downtown Middlebury can be a challenge during business hours.

But town officials are arguing there’s adequate parking; you just need to know where to look. And not enough people are looking at the municipal lot on Mill Street in the Frog Hollow district, where only 30 percent of the 66 spaces are typically occupied, according to a 2012 parking study.

Middlebury Police Log: Town man cited for trying to buy drugs with animal prescription

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Justin Cutler, 30, of Middlebury for allegedly trying to obtain narcotics by fraud on Oct. 2. Police arrested Cutler after investigating a report of someone using a prescription pad from the Middlebury Animal Hospital in an attempt to buy narcotics.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Met with a WomenSafe client regarding safety concerns on Sept. 29.

Retirement complex to install new solar array

MIDDLEBURY — The Residence at Otter Creek may soon feature a 150kW solar array that could defray around 25 percent of the retirement community’s annual energy bill.

Bullrock Corp. — former owners of The Residence (then known as The Lodge at Otter Creek) — proposed installing a solar array consisting of roughly 700 panels on a total of 35 racks dispersed on one acre of land located at 57 Star Point Drive, adjacent to the retirement community off Middle Road in Middlebury.

County chamber plans Tuesday candidates forum

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Chamber will be hosting a candidates’ forum Tuesday, Oct. 7, focusing on contested races for the Vermont House of Representatives.

The forum will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Ilsley Library Community Room in Middlebury. Paul Ralston, owner of Vermont Coffee Company and outgoing Vermont state representative, will be moderating the event.
