Local vigil casts light on social justice issue

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County residents gathered at Middlebury’s Triangle Park this past Thursday evening to express dismay at recent grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for killing unarmed black men. The event, billed as a candlelight “Black Lives Matter” vigil, was one of many nationwide events urging greater police accountability and more justice for communities of color.

From 9-year-old novelist to published author

MIDDLEBURY — As a child, Marshall Highet would often lose herself in the wondrous science fiction worlds created by such celebrated authors as Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.

Now a parent and educator, Highet has created her own futuristic world in a new book that she hopes will beguile young readers with an exciting, heartwarming tale couched in a deeper message of standing up for one’s beliefs, as well as caring for one another and for the world in which we live.

Community Trust transition touched by tragedy as outgoing director dies

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) Executive Director Terry McKnight died unexpectedly of a major heart attack on Saturday, Nov. 29, just weeks away from transitioning into retirement following more than a decade with the county’s largest affordable housing organization. He was 64.

“This is a real personal tragedy,” longtime ACCT board President John Tenny said of the impact McKnight’s death will have on his family, friends and associates.

Middlebury College students stand with Michael Brown

MIDDLEBURY — More than 100 students, faculty and staff stood, silently, arms raised in front of Mead Chapel on the campus of Middlebury College Monday afternoon.

The time was 1:01 p.m., the same time of day that Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Mo. The shooting of the 18-year-old black man reignited a national discussion on racism and police brutality, especially after a grand jury last week declined to bring charges against the officer, Darren Wilson.

Talks pour new hope into Middlebury hydro project

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has decided to reopen its negotiations with Anders Holm as he seeks to re-establish a hydroelectricity operation at the Otter Creek falls.

Holms’ long running plans to construct a 1.6-megawatt hydro turbine near the falls has been at a standstill for more than two years. Holms owns the building at 56 Main St., right next to the picturesque falls. Operating as Middlebury Electric Co., he wants to install a water turbine to generate electricity from the swiftly flowing water that runs underneath his building.

Warming shelter gets new location

MIDDLEBURY — There will again be a warming shelter to help the homeless this winter, but it will be located in the Congregational Church of Middlebury’s Charter House on North Pleasant Street instead of at the Memorial Baptist Church.

Authors to promote locally owned bookshops

MIDDLEBURY — The locally owned Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury will host three authors as honorary booksellers this Saturday.

Hundreds of independent bookstores across the country will be hosting local authors this Saturday, Nov. 29, Small Business Saturday, thanks to a movement called Indies First. Launched by noted author Sherman Alexie in 2013, Indies First encourages authors to volunteer at their local bookstore, to give back some of the support that independent bookstores have traditionally given to authors.
