Monkton selectboard OKs pipeline agreement with Vt. Gas

MONKTON — The Monkton selectboard unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with Vermont Gas Systems at a hastily scheduled special meeting on Wednesday night. The board had rejected an earlier draft of the agreement in a 3-2 decision just nine days earlier.

Half of Monkton Central School teachers plan to leave amid conflict with administration

MONKTON — Nine teachers at the Monkton Central School have chosen to leave the school, according to Monkton Central parents and the school's May newsletter. Along with an administrative decision not to rehire a 10th, that would shrink the elementary school’s 18-person faculty by over 50 percent.

Monkton board rejects natural gas pipeline agreement

MONKTON — Once again, it’s back to the drawing board for Vermont Gas Systems and the town of Monkton.

After several hours of impassioned discussion at a special meeting on Monday night, Monkton’s selectboard rejected a Memorandum of Understanding negotiated between VGS officials and Monkton Selectmen John Phillips and Stephen Pilcher by a 3-2 vote, with Phillips and Pilcher dissenting. Around 70 citizens attended the meeting.

Orb Weaver Farm joins Vermont Land Trust

MONKTON — Marjorie Susman and Marian Pollack, owners of Orb Weaver Farm, are legends in the Vermont cheese world. Soon after buying their first Jerseys in 1981, they quickly realized they needed to do something different to survive in the dairy business. Before long, they decided to make cheese and they haven’t looked back.

Fifteen generations of cows later, their farmhouse cheeses continually win national and international awards.

Susman and Pollack recently conserved 102 acres of their Monkton farm with the Vermont Land Trust.

Monkton’s rescue squad set to relaunch this June

MONKTON — After more than a year without first response service, Monkton is poised to get its rescue squad back.

Four Monkton EMTs, led by assistant fire chief Kevin Alexander, are applying for licensure from the Vermont Department of Health and hope to be up and running in June.

 “It’ll bring quicker response time,” said Alexander, an EMT who serves with Bristol Rescue in addition to his service with the Monkton Fire Department. “There’s definitely a need.”

Monkton says no thanks to new town office for third time

MONKTON — Monkton voters on Town Meeting Day rejected two bonds related to their municipal facilities — one for the third time.

A $1 million bond to fund a new town hall and library on a parcel the town owns on Monkton Ridge was defeated by a margin of 287-225. Monkton voters also rejected a $120,000 bond for an extension to the fire facility on States Prison Hollow Road by just 12 votes, 260-248.

Monkton landowners wary of pipeline plan

MONKTON — Last August was the first time Beverly Latreille, 82, of Rotax Road in Monkton heard of it. The man who came to her door was working for an engineering firm that had been hired by Vermont Gas Systems, the South Burlington natural gas company now planning to build a 42-mile, $72 million pipeline extension through Addison County to Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Monkton to vote on new town hall, library

MONKTON — On Town Meeting Day, Monkton voters will be asked to consider a $1 million bond to fund the construction of a new town hall and library on the 5-acre parcel of land on Monkton Ridge that the town purchased with funds raised through a 2006 bond. Town officials say the current town hall and library are insufficient for Monkton’s growing needs.

Early morning fire destroys Monkton horse barn

MONKTON — Police are looking for help in determining the origin of a fire that consumed a horse barn in Monkton early Sunday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Feb. 24 the Monkton Fire Department responded to a fire at 271 White Ridge Lane in Monkton. The fire was reported after a Monkton resident saw an “orange glow” in the area of White Ridge Lane.

Monkton DRB rejects quarry proposal

MONKTON — Monkton’s Development Review Board has denied a contentious application for a 39.5-acre quarry proposed by Michael and Allan Brisson’s Brisson Stone LLC because the quarry would have extracted bedrock and crushed it for gravel, which the board said was prohibited. The quarry was to be managed by David Shlansky’s Burchfield Management Company.

Brisson Stone and Burchfield will likely appeal the Monkton DRB’s decision to the Vermont Environmental Court, Allan Brisson told the Independent in a telephone interview.
