Opinion: Unemployment, population growth are tricky problems

Posted on February 17, 2014 |
By Dave Van Vleck

Editor’s note: This letter was written in reply to a letter in the Burlington Free Press (Jan. 9, Page 2c), in which University of Vermont economics professor Art Woolf proposed that Vermont increase its population in order to decrease unemployment.?

Opinion: Cell phones in cars not a key issue

Posted on February 17, 2014 |
By Laurie Childers

Editor’s note: The writer send this letter originally to Addison County state Sen. Claire Ayer.

Hello, Ms. Ayer,

I met you at the top of the Crown Point Bridge during the opening celebration in 2012. I was pleased to meet you and feel I am well represented by you. Thank you for your service.

Opinion: Resist Middlebury College's sprawl further into town

Posted on February 17, 2014 |
By Diane Mott

Middlebury residents:

Again, Middlebury College tries to creep further into town. Have you any idea how much property they have appropriated? Before even thinking of voting for losing a marvelous classic building and giving up more land, get a list of what Middlebury College owns in town without being taxed.

Trying to squeeze the town property further into a small space behind the library is ridiculous — no parking, period, and the town gets smaller.

Jessie Raymond: Auction goers bid adieu to reason

Posted on February 13, 2014 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last weekend, I finally attended my first auction. I came home without any of the antiques I saw there, but with a deeper understanding of the human psyche. That’s even better, because (a) it was free and (b) I don’t have to dust it.

Clippings: Tweet from Boston: Print is not dead

Posted on February 13, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Raise your hand if you’ve been to a professional convention, trade show, or other event held to honor winners, provide training, and help you network with colleagues in the greater region.

We go every February to the stately Boston Park Plaza for the New England Newspaper and Press Association convention, attend seminars over two days, have at least one good dinner out on the town, celebrate well-deserved awards, and then head back for a Sunday at home. It’s fun, engaging and we all learn more than we ever expect.

Opinion: Middlebury town project is a 'marriage of convenience'

Posted on February 12, 2014 |
By Craig Bingham

The town office/recreation facility proposal is a marriage of convenience between Middlebury College and the town of Middlebury. It is well known that marriages of this sort leave much to be desired. I have noted several major flaws in this proposal, any one of which justifies a rejection by the voters. I’m sure that others can find more reasons that warrant leaving this ill-conceived proposal at the altar.

Here are some of the flaws I found, in no particular order.

Opinion: Freidin changes mind on Middlebury building plan

Posted on February 10, 2014 |
By John Freidin

In the Jan. 30 Addison County Independent article about my running for Middlebury selectboard, I said I would vote yes to relocate the town offices and gym. After additional reflection, I have decided to vote no.

My interest in serving on the selectboard has always been to help heal divisions within town and to facilitate community-minded decisions, involving all who are interested.

Opinion: Vermont economy isn't as great as politicans claim

Posted on February 10, 2014 |
By Jeff Provost

As I drove down the road the other day, headed from one commitment to the next, I was hit with a sudden, in-your-face realization about the current state of Vermont’s economy.

Sure, I’ve seen plenty of articles and reports providing contrasting doom and gloom and optimistic outlooks for our beloved Green Mountain State, but I never really knew exactly where we stood. Until now.

Clippings by John McCright: GPS will help us find a better way

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By John S. McCright

Last year Addison Independent columnist Eric Davis mentioned in a piece that one way the state could raise money to fund badly needed road and bridge repairs would be to put a GPS device in every car in Vermont and then charge a tax based on the actual number of miles driven each year. It is such an elegant and fair solution — the people who wear out the roads pay to replace them. What could be more fair?

Eric Davis: Unemployment stats misleading

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Eric Davis

In last week’s State of the Union speech, President Obama took credit for “the lowest unemployment rate in over five years.” On the surface this claim is correct. By the Labor Department’s commonly used measure, 6.7 percent of Americans were unemployed in December 2013, the lowest since October 2008.

Many economists have analyzed data on employment and unemployment over time. This work shows that, for many Americans, the job market is still far from full recovery mode.
