Bone Builders volunteer keeps elders moving freely

ORWELL — Marlene Latourelle had already spent the past six years helping Shoreham-area seniors stay fit and battle osteoporosis as the leader of a twice-per-week Bone Builders class when she decided she wanted to expand her outreach.

Now the Orwell resident is preparing to teach a tai chi class — an additional offering she believes will help seniors of all physical abilities remain active and social.

“I really enjoy it,” she said of Bone Builders and tai chi. “I almost don’t look at it as a volunteer thing.”

Orwell pupils use floating classroom

SUDBURY –– Fourteen kids and two teachers guided their canoes away from the shores of Lake Hortonia and paddled over to a small bay full of lily pads and milfoil, looking around at the different plants and wildlife and taking samples from the water.

The group went out to the lake this past Thursday as part of the five-day East Creek Project, a canoe day camp for students from Orwell Village School that is sponsored by the Vermont Community Foundation’s South Lake Champlain Fund.

Orwell teacher bids farewell after 36 years

ORWELL — In the 36 years since Sally (Gilmore) DeLancey, 57, first set foot in the Orwell Village School to start work as a kindergarten teacher, a lot has changed.

DeLancey, who is retiring from her position this month, said she has seen curriculum pushed ahead by leaps and bounds, and children have been required to know more and more in their early years.

Orwell talks traffic safety on 22A

ORWELL — Since this year’s town meeting in Orwell, the selectboard and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) have worked to address traffic safety issues at the intersection of Route 22A and Route 73 in the center of town.

The ongoing issue got a new spark on Town Meeting Day with a lengthy discussion of traffic safety issues at the intersection of the two state roads.
