RIPTON — It’s the year of the protester, according to “Time” magazine, and Ripton’s Bill McKibben fits the bill. So well, in fact, that he made it onto the “People Who Mattered” list in the magazine’s annual year-in-review issue.

By John S. McCright

RIPTON — Middlebury College’s Nordic ski center in Ripton has completed a new five-kilometer ski trail and enhanced its ski shop in a major step forward in the effort to make Addison County a better draw for those interested in winter sports and recreation.

The new trail has been certified for national and international competition, and was one of the key elements that helped Middlebury solidify its bid to host the NCAA Skiing Championships in 2013, according to Mike Hussey, director of the Carroll and Jane Rikert Nordic Center.

Route 125 in Ripton and Middlebury not as badly hurt as in 2008 floods

Posted on August 29, 2011 |
By John Flowers

RIPTON/MIDDLEBURY — In a scene somewhat reminiscent of the flooding of August 2008, Route 125 from East Middlebury to Ripton experienced washouts in three locations as Tropical Storm Irene ripped through Addison County Sunday.

In one location, the Middlebury River took out a swath of guardrail, noted Ripton Selectman Richard Collitt.

“It’s nothing as serious as 2008,” Collitt said, harkening back to a brutal stretch of rain that erased several portions of Route 125 and took out entire sections of some local roads in Ripton, East Middlebury, Salisbury, Leicester, Goshen and Hancock.

Update (8/25/11):

WASHINGTON, D.C. — From where he sits — behind bars in a Washington, D.C., jail cell — everything is going according to plan for Bill McKibben.

The environmental author and activist was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Washington while protesting the proposed construction of a 1,700-mile pipeline that would pump oil from the Tar Sands of Alberta, Canada, to oil refineries in Texas. He was one of 70 arrests on Saturday.

McKibben: Ripton trails are 'book of the outdoors'

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Jeff Price

RIPTON — Prominent author and environmentalist Bill McKibben gave a talk and short reading last Tuesday on the Bread Loaf campus just up the road from Ripton. Rather than the usual environmental rallying cry, no matter how evenly tempered McKibben’s rallying cries can be, the talk focused instead on what the forest land around the campus, Joseph Battell’s bequest, has to offer those interested.

As McKibben puts it, the trails around Ripton are there to teach students “the book of the outdoors.”

Ripton to consider 10-cabin site

Posted on June 2, 2011 |
By John Flowers

RIPTON — The Ripton planning commission this summer is scheduled to field an application for 10 cabins on part of a 112-acre parcel at 2430 North Branch Road. The 10-unit planned unit development is being considered by property owners Carol and Marty Kulczyk. Tentative plans call for the cabins to be rentals and confined to a 24-acre segment of the 112-acre parcel. The Kulczyks would like to build the cabins — ranging from 400 to 600 square feet — in four phases, according to recent planning commission minutes. Each cabin would have a bathroom and an efficiency kitchen.
