Shoreham takes aim at business growth

SHOREHAM — With its quaint town park, venerable historic buildings and sprawling farmland, it is easy to stereotype Shoreham as an idyllic rural hamlet.

But that Rockwellian portrait belies a growing business community that is organizing itself to give Shoreham the added reputation as a destination for goods and services.

The Shoreham Economic Development Committee (SEDC) hosted its first Business-to-Business meeting late last month, an event that drew more than two dozen local vendors and entrepreneurs.

Shoreham youth back from epic sea voyage

SHOREHAM — It’s understandable if Shoreham’s Nick Balfour is having a tougher time than usual adjusting to the spate of cold, snowy weather in Vermont this winter.

That’s because only a short time ago, the 22-year-old was among a group of 27 college students sailing the balmy equatorial Pacific on a six-week-long scientific odyssey during which, among other things, they gained a better understanding of the effects of climate change on vital marine nutrients.

Route 74 bridge closed for deck repairs

Posted on February 17, 2011 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials are targeting President’s Day for the reopening of so-called Bridge No. 2, which spans the Lemon Fair River on Route 74 near the Cornwall-Shoreham town line.

On Monday morning VTrans officials closed one lane of Bridge No. 2 after discovering a large hole in the concrete deck of the steel-beam span, erected back in 1939. Officials closed the 182-foot-long bridge to all traffic later in the day.

By Addy Indy Staff

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Agency of Transportation on Monday closed the bridge on Route 74 over the Lemon Fair River in Shoreham just south of the Cornwall line.

A hole in the bridge deck was discovered by district maintenance forces early Monday morning, at which time the bridge was closed to one lane for the safety of the traveling public. Subsequent inspections revealed additional concerns with the concrete decks, and all traffic across the bridge was detoured as of 5 p.m. Monday evening.

Pig drives election frenzy

SHOREHAM — Town Meeting Day is just around the corner, and candidates for local school and municipal offices are jockeying for position as the election approaches.

But in Shoreham, the race garnering the most headlines involves a field of seven people who are each hoping to get just enough votes to finish second. That’s because the “winner” of this race gets the dubious honor of smooching a baby — only we aren’t talking about the human variety that politicians want to be seen holding.

Heminway and her dogs form bond for sledding success

SHOREHAM — I hear the howls before I can even see Lissy Heminway’s house in Shoreham. Their loud cries reverberate off the trees and into my ears, making me think I’m entering into some kind of coyote reserve.

As my car pulls up to the house on Shacksboro Road and I see the huge pen of 12 or so dogs hugging the fence, I remember where I am. Today I’m going dog sledding.

Editor’s note: This article is the final in a three-part series on Addison County residents who have sought help from the Quit Tobacco Program at Porter Hospital in order to kick their cigarette habits.

SHOREHAM — For the first time in decades, Deborah Diamond, 66, could smell the coming of spring.

Earlier this year, Diamond’s vow to quit smoking once and for all was bolstered when she caught a whiff of that “lovely green smell” that she never wants to lose again.

SHOREHAM — A cold warehouse is hardly the image that comes to mind as the heart of a local foods movement.

But that is what the owners of Vermont Refrigerated Storage and members of the Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN) envision for the 35,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Shoreham.

Shoreham voters reject town office building options

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — A majority of Shoreham voters on Tuesday decided to take a pass on two different options for building new town offices, instead electing to do “none of the above.”

That decision volleys the town-office-expansion issue onto the desk of the selectboard, which will spend the coming months deciding whether to fashion a project more modest than the $556,000 and $1,070,000 plans, both of which failed to garner enough support on Tuesday.

Shoreham residents to determine the future of town offices on Dec. 7

Posted on December 2, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — Shoreham voters will got to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7, to pick one of two possible makeovers for their town offices — or decide not to make any changes at all.

Around 100 residents gathered on Monday, Nov. 29, to hear presentations on two options for replacing the current 20-foot-by-30-foot municipal office building on the town commons. The current offices were built in 1962 as a one-person set-up with one typewriter and one phone.
The two options include:
