A Season for what?

Posted on December 23, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

In my previous column I made light of the human propensity to whine — a trait at least as common among outdoor enthusiasts as in the general population. And November and December are especially good months for complaining. For one thing, it is the season for steelhead fishing and duck hunting. Of all hunting and fishing sports, these may be the two that inflict the most suffering, and thus also engender the greatest level of stoic pride among participants.

Nobody, even Sox, spends like Yankees

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Well, it’s silly season for baseball again, where some pitchers are awarded salaries (a reported $17 million a year for John Lackey) that are more than 400 times the average annual income for folks who actually do something productive for society, teachers.

But that’s an argument for another day. I can’t stop the Yankees from giving A-Rod $32 million a year, an amount that is almost exactly double the total of the combined preliminary Addison Northwest Supervisory Union school budgets.

Enjoying the conditions (afterwards)

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

Hunters and anglers are, in many ways, like normal people. Which is to say, we like to boast. Normal people who have hunters or anglers for acquaintances understand, and sometimes accept, that. The misconception that normal people have about hunters and anglers pertains not to whether or we are given to boasting, but to the nature of that boasting.

Love the game, but can't play

Posted on December 3, 2009 |
By Karl Lindholm

It’s hard to sit on the bench in any sport. I know this from personal experience, though some time ago.

It’s especially hard in basketball, it seems to me. There are so few players — only five can play at any one time, and then there’s the tyranny of the clock: only 32 minutes to be parceled out in high school games, 40 in college.

At Middlebury College, two of the best players on this year’s talented team (5-0 so far, with two more home games this week), Kevin Kelleher and Ashton Coghlan, are sitting on the bench and haven’t played a minute this season.

It's important to remember to be grateful

Posted on November 26, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

When you take something for granted, you often lose it.

History and personal experience have shown this to be true of much, if not all, that is important. It is true not only of our possessions, but also of our relationships; health; traditions (including hunting, fishing and other outdoor traditions); clean soil, water, and air; wilderness (and more broadly the beauty and availability of those spaces where we engage in our most cherished outdoor activities); freedom (of all types); and the very food that will tastefully (and abundantly) adorn our tables this Thursday.

Know your jargon? Try out our test.

Posted on November 19, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Every trade has its jargon. We journalists like to laugh at corporate babble (“We must think outside the box to empower our stakeholders”), edu-speak (“Our youngsters require enhanced child-centered collaborative activities for discovery learning”) and cop talk (“I advised the male subjects to disperse”).

But we too, even humble sports writers, are guilty of jargon, as our Independent proofreaders constantly remind my editor and me.

Just what is a sport?

Posted on November 12, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

Just what is a “sport” anyway? I was reminded of that age-old question two weeks ago. I wrote my “outdoor sports column” on deep woods raking. But my editor, alertly recognizing that raking isn’t actually a sport, moved me out of the sports section into the “Clippings” section.

Retirement: Hang on or hang 'em up?

Posted on November 5, 2009 |
By Karl Lindholm

Our favorite athletes are shooting stars. Young at 25, over the hill at 30, their prime years are brief. For the rest of us, it only seems so, as we look back.

Most athletes retire involuntarily and prematurely at 18 or 22, when their school days are over. They have to reinvent themselves, forge new identities, figure out who they are in order to remain relevant and alive.

Joint football effort worth a serious look

Posted on October 22, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Football can play an important role at a school. Back when Mount Abraham Union High School adopted the sport, I remember co-athletic director Jeff Stetson making the point that football would serve students that Mount Abe’s other fall sports — soccer and cross country, which both favor greyhounds, not Great Danes — did not. Over the years, it’s fair to say he’s been proven right, regardless of the program’s ups and downs.

Two hours spent in a tree

Posted on October 15, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

I woke at 6 a.m. to the sound of steady rain on a metal roof. I’d been vaguely aware of the low rumble for several hours — it had swirled through the restless moments of my sleep. Awake, I was fully aware of the sound. I lay in place for several minutes carrying on an internal debate about the implications of that rain — which I knew was a cold one, just a few degrees warmer than sleet. Finally, I rose to dress for hunting.
