Riverwatch group readies for water-sampling season

STARKSBORO — The ground is frozen, the creeks are shelving with ice, and water critters are still comatose, but the Addison County Riverwatch Collaborative is busy gearing up for the 2013 spring-summer season of taking water samples from our local streams and rivers.

Starksboro man killed in Route 4 vehicle crash

SHERBURNE — Vermont State Police are seeking help from the public in learning more about the crash that killed a Starksboro man in Sherburne on Friday afternoon.

Marland Brewer, 47, of Starksboro was killed in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Route 4 in Sherburne just east of the Killington Skyship gondola and Mission Farm Road on Dec. 14.

Troopers were called to the scene at 4:33 p.m. and told that a driver in one of the vehicles was entrapped. Traffic on the road was closed while police dealt with the accident.

Starksboro artist creates tribute to family home

BRISTOL — Cynthia Guild Kling, a Starksboro-based painter who was one of the first artists to become part of Art on Main, has painted landscapes all her life.

That covers a wide variety of landscapes, because Kling has lived in many places throughout her long life, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Mexico, Sweden and Kuwait.

Teen shaves head for Obama ... again

STARKSBORO — For the second time, 13-year-old Connor Norland has chosen to celebrate President Barack Obama’s election by shaving his head.

In 2008 the Starksboro youth shaved his entire head and donated his hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Little ol' school house getting new life

SOUTH STARKSBORO — Greg Orvis easily recalls the days when the one big classroom at the Jerusalem Schoolhouse in South Starksboro was buzzing with activity. As many as 27 students in grades 1 through 8  learned their lessons under the watchful eye of Mrs. Wyman when Orvis attended the school in the late 1950s and ’60s.

“She was very organized, and some of the older kids helped the younger kids,” Orvis, 61, said of Lucy Wyman, who taught at the grade school for years.

Lewis Creek Farm lands USDA energy grant to build solar project

STARKSBORO — Lewis Creek Farm, one of Starksboro’s largest crop farms, is aiming to expand the already hefty solar energy portfolio in the small town.

At the end of last month, the USDA announced that its Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) would fund 450 energy projects across the nation. The aim of the program is to help farmers and small rural businesses cut energy consumption and reduce costs.

Eight Vermont projects were funded, including one by Starksboro’s Hank Bissell, who runs Lewis Creek Farm.

Starksboro man dies in car crash

FAYSTON — A Starksboro man died after driving his vehicle into a telephone pole off Route 17 in Fayston on Tuesday evening.

Jonah Rule, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities.

Vermont State Police said they were called to the scene of a one-car crash on Route 17 at around 8 p.m. There, they found a white, 2008 Subaru Impreza overturned on its roof off the south side of the roadway.

STARKSBORO — The Starksboro community will have to adjust to life next year without their long-time principal. Come August, he’ll be 2,000 miles south.

Dan Noel, principal of Robinson Elementary School, and his wife Nicki Bergstrom-Noel, an English teacher at Mount Abraham Union High School, made the decision to take a one-year leave of absence next year and take their two daughters — Delia, 4, and Hazel, 2 — on the adventure of a lifetime. The two educators are relocating their family to the 65-square-mile Caribbean island of St. Kitts.

Rabid raccoon bites little boy in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Public Health authorities are urging people to be aware that rabid animals have been confirmed in Addison County, and to take precautions when they see an animal that may have rabies.

This comes after a four-and-a-half-year-old boy in Starksboro was treated for rabies after being bitten by a raccoon on his back porch.
