Starksboro project tests feasibility of solar power

STARKSBORO — In October of 2010, the town of Starksboro took major steps to revamp its energy portfolio by installing 25 solar power arrays mounted on trackers on 1.5 acres of land adjacent to Robinson Elementary School.

From the outset, one of the main goals of this project was to net zero energy consumption for the school and town buildings. Put another way, town and school officials sought to produce as much energy using solar as they drew from the electric power grid in the course of a year.

STARKSBORO — This past weekend’s bright blue skies gave a burst of solar energy to Starksboro’s Common Ground Center, where a collection of world-renowned environmentalists, local residents and renewable energy developers congregated on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the nonprofit’s handicap accessible Eco-Lodge. Generating electricity from eight solar panels that track the sun and deriving hot water and heat from solar hot water heaters, the lodge also takes ecologic strides by using recycled and on-site harvested materials.

STARKSBORO — Kerry Kurt runs her general store a little bit differently than the average business owner.

On any given afternoon, one might approach the Horse n Rebel Grille and Gallery on Route 116 in Starksboro and find a note on the door reading, “Out on the farm, call if you need me,” accompanied by a phone number.

And it’s not unusual for Kurt to return from her chores to find that people have left notes for her on the counter inside with a dollar for the Arizona Iced Tea, or an old saddle.

STARKSBORO — Students at Robinson Elementary School will soon be more familiar with the workings of a photovoltaic solar array than the average energy consumer. Technicians recently installed on the Starksboro school’s property 25 solar arrays that will produce all of the power for both the school and the Starksboro town offices.

Officials hope the new technology will not only power the two buildings, but also prove to be a powerful learning tool, as well.
