Painter in Vergennes makes art in a meditative state

VERGENNES — Pacing the floor in paint-speckled slippers, Peter Fried leads a tour of his small gallery and studio. The narrow space, previously used as a shoe store, had high ceilings with a wide glass window facing Main Street in downtown Vergennes.

The scene in Fried’s space is that of creative activity just paused. Two pieces of crusty bread smeared with peanut butter sit next to partially completed drawings, a pair of easels stand idle at opposing ends of the room and all around him, the white walls are covered with samples of his work.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Mayor Bill Benton last week confirmed that he and his sister have a verbal agreement to sell to Vergennes some riverfront land they own next to the city docks.

City losing its playground grant

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials on Wednesday learned the city will not receive an extension on its $21,000 state grant to support an East Street preschool playground, news that effectively pulls the plug on a project that generated opposition among neighbors and mixed reviews from other city residents.

The city had already received one extension from the Department of Buildings & General Services that required that work on the $42,000, quarter-acre project, proposed for city land next to the municipal pool, be under way by June.

VERGENNES — Visitors entering the Emerson Guest House bed and breakfast on Main Street in Vergennes shouldn’t be surprised if they are greeted with a rousing rendition the “Major-General’s Song” from Pirates of Penzance, or “Prima Donna” from The Phantom of the Opera. And many walk in impressed with the vocal prowess of the singer, Bill Walsh, a professional actor who along with his wife — dancer and choreographer Sue Burk Walsh — are livening up the theater scene in the Little City.

Proposed city playground now in jeopardy

VERGENNES — The proposed East Street preschool playground appeared to be on life support after Tuesday’s Vergennes City Council meeting.

Project designer David Raphael of Middlebury landscape design firm LandWorks told the aldermen on Tuesday he could no longer continue to devote time to the project, and that because of needed sitework it appeared even the scaled-down version approved by aldermen this winter could not be built for its $42,000 price tag.

Ed Place and Jon Sullivan.JPG

VERGENNES — When Addison resident Ed Place and Vergennes resident Jon Sullivan met at the Bixby Library a little more than three years ago, they quickly realized they were not getting acquainted, but re-acquainted.

It turned out that Place had been Sullivan’s 4-H shooting instructor when Sullivan was 14, about 17 years earlier. That was before Sullivan left his native Vergennes to earned his degrees in computer science and business management at the University of Vermont, and then headed to California to work for more than 12 years for a high-tech firm.
