By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Mary Johnson Children’s Center, which has long been established in Middlebury and has operated summer programs in Vergennes and elsewhere in the county, is once again working toward building a childcare center in the Little City.

Mary Johnson’s goal, said Co-director Barbara Saunders, is what Mary Johnson officials believe is a badly needed Vergennes childcare center to serve 30 preschoolers, one that would be built on a 1.5-acre Armory Lane lot near the city’s three-year-old senior center.

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday agreed to submit a to-be-announced lower dollar amount for a third budget vote and to pick June 9 as the vote date.

The board will wait until a May 28 meeting to make final a new spending plan for the June 9 vote, one that will be held on the same day as a third Mount Abraham Union High School budget vote.

Board members on Monday said they hope to adopt a VUHS budget that will lower the projected tax impacts in Addison Northwest Supervisory towns by several cents.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents this past Tuesday, by a 4-1 margin, backed adding a first-floor room to the Vergennes Opera House’s lease in City Hall.

By a 359-89 tally on May 5, voters gave the Vergennes City Council permission to amend the 2003 lease the Friends of the Vergennes Opera House Inc. signed with the city to include “the so-called ticket booth.” That vote was held in conjunction with the second vote on a Vergennes Union High School budget proposal.

Voters reject both parts of VUHS multiple choice budget proposal

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday sent two VUHS budget articles down to defeat for the second time in 2015, one by a close margin and one by a landslide.

A $10.31 million proposal to fund the high school, and which cut $156,000 from the budget defeated on Town Meeting Day, lost 722-676 or 51.6-48.4 percent.

A second article, one that could have only taken effect if the first article had passed, would have added that $156,000 back into VUHS spending. It failed by 843-556, or 60-40 percent.

Painter in Vergennes makes art in a meditative state

VERGENNES — Pacing the floor in paint-speckled slippers, Peter Fried leads a tour of his small gallery and studio. The narrow space, previously used as a shoe store, had high ceilings with a wide glass window facing Main Street in downtown Vergennes.

The scene in Fried’s space is that of creative activity just paused. Two pieces of crusty bread smeared with peanut butter sit next to partially completed drawings, a pair of easels stand idle at opposing ends of the room and all around him, the white walls are covered with samples of his work.

City losing its playground grant

Posted on April 30, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials on Wednesday learned the city will not receive an extension on its $21,000 state grant to support an East Street preschool playground, news that effectively pulls the plug on a project that generated opposition among neighbors and mixed reviews from other city residents.

The city had already received one extension from the Department of Buildings & General Services that required that work on the $42,000, quarter-acre project, proposed for city land next to the municipal pool, be under way by June.
