VUHS teacher starts strong in online voting for $100,000 prize

VERGENNES — A representative of the smallest state (in terms of population) in New England is in a contest with representatives of each of the region’s five larger states to win a $100,000 prize for her school. In early voting it looks like she has a chance to win.

City woman charged with felony over sexual assault claim

VERGENNES — A Vergennes woman pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of false swearing and a misdemeanor charge of giving false information to a police officer, after she allegedly made a false allegation that her husband had sexually assaulted her.

VUHS teacher seeks online votes to win $100,000 prize for school

VERGENNES — A Vergennes Union High School Spanish teacher has been chosen to represent Vermont in the running for a prestigious regional award that would bring with it a $100,000 award for her school. To win the award she must receive the most votes in an online poll that is open to all members of the public.

Officials eye new tools to fight drug addiction

VERGENNES — Local law enforcement, health care and social service officials turned out in force in Vergennes on Sept. 3 to plan new strategies for stemming the alarming flow, and use, of heroin and other opiates in Addison County.

The meeting was billed as a follow-up to last spring’s “summit on opiate addiction” called by Gov. Peter Shumlin, who has made the topic a prime focus of his administration.

Vergennes girls top Otters, 2-0, in soccer rivalry

VERGENNES — In what coaches from both sides described as a bounceback effort, on Friday the host Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team topped visiting Otter Valley, 2-0.

The Commodores, coming off a 3-0 opening loss at Mill River, evened their record at 1-1 with a strong effort at defense and midfield and two well-executed goals, one scored by sophomore midfielder Caroline Johnston and the other by sophomore striker Charlotte Haigis, which was assisted by Johnston.

Vergennes to host substance abuse meeting on Wedesday

VERGENNES — The Vermont Department of Health will host a regional follow-up to the Governor’s Summit on Opiate Addiction from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at St. Peter’s Parish Hall at 85 Maple St. in Vergennes.

The agenda will include an overview of Addison County’s substance abuse treatment options and drug-related crime data; an overview of Rutland’s “Project Vision”; and an opportunity for input into how to move treatment programs forward.

Aldermen hear concerns about restrictions in city plan update

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Monday heard a few North Main Street and downtown business and building owners express concerns about restrictions in the proposed Vergennes city plan update.

Plans do not create zoning, but form the basis on which zoning laws are written. Vergennes’ 2009 plan is set to expire on Sept. 29.
