Two area supervisory unions reject school consolidation

BRANDON / FAIR HAVEN  — The Rutland Northeast and Rutland Addison supervisory unions on March 26 both passed resolutions officially rejecting H.833, the school consolidation bill.

Shumlin unconvinced on school funding changes, upbeat on single-payer health care

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday warned about the potential legal consequences of overhauling the state’s education finance system and expressed his priorities for a single-payer health care system that could be in place as soon as 2017.

Shumlin made his comments during an interview at the Addison Independent. The governor also appeared on Monday at a legislative luncheon at the Middlebury Legion (see related story on Page 1A) at which he was challenged on his support for the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.

Shumlin addresses other issues at luncheon

MIDDLEBURY — Most of the dozen or so questions Gov. Peter Shumlin fielded at the Legislative Lunch at Middlebury’s American Legion hall on Monday dealt with the proposed natural gas pipeline that would bisect the county.

But in his limited time in Middlebury the governor also briefly touched upon:

•His hope to have all New England states raise their minimum wage rates to $10.10 per hour by 2017.

I’m driving to work too fast, late as usual, trying to make up for those last five minutes I spent puttering around my house when I should have gotten out the door. I lean on the accelerator a little and grab my trusty travel mug, lifting it to my lips just as my wheels hit a bumpy, rippled section of the pavement. I hit the brakes. The tires make painful washboard sounds, and coffee splashes out of my cup and all over the steering wheel.

Lawmakers discuss pipeline regulation

WHITING  — Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Whiting drew several Cornwall residents who urged lawmakers to slow down or suspend a Public Service Board review of Vermont Gas Systems’s proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline. The $70 million project is designed to deliver natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Sen. Sanders fights for minimum wage hike

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., praised President Barack Obama’s focus on income inequality in his annual State of the Union address last week, and urged his colleagues in Congress to back legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage.

“I’m glad that the president has recognized the enormity of the problem,” Sanders said in an interview with the Independent. “Frankly, I think he could have gotten into it a little bit deeper.”
