Vermont minimum wage is up 14 cents in 2013

MONTPELIER (AP) — Vermont’s minimum wage went up 14 cents an hour, effective New Year’s Day, to $8.60 per hour.

That’s according to a state law that says the wage will go up each year by either 5 percent or an amount that matches the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less.

The minimum wage for workers in places like hotels and restaurants, who rely on tips for a significant part of their income, went from $4.10 to $4.17.

Such increases often trigger raises for workers making just above the minimum wage, as well.

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers will return to the Statehouse next week to tackle an agenda they said will include tough budgeting, further health care reforms, growing jobs, Lake Champlain cleanup, promoting renewable energy, battling drug crime and addiction, and perhaps some gun control measures.

“Money, money and money,” Rep. David Sharpe, D-Bristol, answered in response to what he believed would be the top three concerns during the 2013 session.

Vermonter spreads Christmas joy

It all happened one Thanksgiving weekend back in the 1980s after Richard Wood watched Miracle on 34th Street (as is his family’s Thanksgiving tradition). The South Burlington native latched on to what Alfred said in the movie: “Of all the ‘isms’ the worst of them is commercialism!”

On a lark, with the intention of taking on the “black” in Black Friday, Wood put on a Santa hat and headed out to the local shopping centers.

Sports Illustrated lauds Brush Davisson

BURLINGTON — Kelly Brush Davisson has been selected as one of 10 Athletes Who Care by Sports Illustrated magazine.

The magazine’s Dec. 10 issue includes Brush Davisson on a list of athletes singled out for the charitable work they do off the playing field. Brush Davisson, 26, founded the Kelly Brush Foundation in 2006, following a ski racing crash that left her paralyzed. She was a member of the Middlebury College ski team at the time.

From her Lincoln studio an artist paints Vermont's landscape

The light on this cloudy November day is silver and stark, giving the world a washed-out look. Just the sort of day Andrew Wyeth would have loved to paint. But then, as I drive south on a dirt road in Lincoln, the light shifts. Sunlight spills through a gap in the clouds and the world transforms from bleak black-and-white to rich color.

Where before I’d been looking at frost-killed fields and the stubs of dead cornstalks, I’m now noticing the orangey light that illuminates the trees lining the road and brings out the greens still in the grass.

Police warn of imposters posing as DCF officials

WATERBURY (AP) — Police say they have received reports of suspicious people posing as representatives of the Vermont Department of Children and Families (DCF).

State Police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said a woman and two men showed up at a Sunderland residence this past Monday, Dec. 3, and told a grandmother that a child’s parents were under investigation by “child protective services.”

State creates $1M grant fund for food and forestry firms

MIDDLEBURY — State officials late last week announced that they are soliciting applications from entrepreneurs who want a portion of nearly $1 million in grant funds set aside for food and forestry businesses.

Grants ranging from $3,000 to $100,000 will be awarded later this winter by Vermont’s Working Lands Enterprise Board from a $986,5000 fund designed to fuel the Green Mountain State’s economy and build its local food system while maintaining its open lands and natural vistas.

More police on Vermont roads for the holiday
