New Vermont hunting rules in effect

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department points out that three new hunting rules passed by the Legislature are now in effect.

1.      A person shall not take or attempt to take any wild animal by shooting a firearm, a bow and arrow or a crossbow while on or within 25 feet of the traveled portion of a public road.

2.      It is also illegal to shoot a firearm, a bow and arrow or a crossbow across the traveled portion of a public road.

Kunin kicks off new group dedicated to electing women in Vermont

BURLINGTON — Former Gov. Madeleine Kunin and other former and current state officials on Tuesday kicked off a new political advocacy group in Vermont, aimed at electing more women to office.

The group, called Emerge Vermont, is dedicated to recruiting and training Democratic women. It is a branch of Emerge America, a national organization that formed in California in 2002 and now operates in 14 states, including Vermont.

Archery deer hunting season begins Oct. 5

VERMONT — Hunters are enthusiastic about Vermont’s upcoming Oct. 5-27 and Dec. 7-15 archery deer hunting season, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. 

A hunter may take up to three deer in Vermont’s archery season with three archery licenses. No more than one of the deer taken during archery season may be a legal buck. No antlerless deer may be taken in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) E, where antlerless deer hunting is prohibited in 2013.

$9 million grant to upgrade western Vermont railroad tracks

ADDISON COUNTY — Ongoing efforts to upgrade Vermont’s Western Corridor rail line for the resumption of passenger rail traffic got a big boost last week in the form of a $9 million federal grant that will fund 7 miles of welded rail and other projects between Rutland and Middlebury.

Mac Parker appeals prison sentence

BURLINGTON (AP) — A Vermont man convicted for his role in a movie fraud case is appealing his 55-month prison sentence.

When 57-year-old Malcolm “Mac” Parker of Addison was sentenced last month, the judge rejected a government recommendation to give him a three-year sentence.

Meat-eating mushroom aid in the growth of the white pine

Plants are not often thought of as predators. They’re the nice guys. With over 300,000 species known to exist, only a small fraction are known to be meat-eaters. In our northern bogs, for example, insects are trapped on the sticky hairs of sundew or drowned in the pitcher plant’s water.

Research now suggests that at least one tree may owe its size to more than just sun, water and good soils.

'Sounding Joy!' - a classic Vermont chorus - is now quiet

RANDOLPH — Sounding Joy!, the noted Randolph-based auditioned chorus, is disbanding after almost three decades of singing together. Founded in 1984 by Marjorie Drysdale, the group has performed throughout Vermont, presenting music from the 16th century to the present.

Sometimes the music was delivered in standard concert format, but often it was served up on a platter of music, stories, scripts, costumes and food.

Shumlin, Ayer welcome closure of nuclear plant; wary of decommissioning

MONTPELIER (AP) — Vermont’s only nuclear power plant will shut down by the end of next year, ending a nasty legal battle over the future of the 40-year-old plant, Entergy Corp. announced Tuesday.

The Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station is expected to cease power production after its current fuel cycle and will begin being decommissioned in the fourth quarter of 2014, the company said. The station will remain under the oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission throughout the decommissioning process.

Entergy to close Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant at the end of 2014

VERNON — Entergy Corp. on Tuesday said it plans to close and decommission its Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station in Vernon. The station is expected to cease power production after its current fuel cycle and move to safe shutdown in the fourth quarter of 2014.

New Orleans-based Entergy said Vermont Yankee will remain under the oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission throughout the decommissioning process.
