By Michelle Monroe (St. Albans Messenger)

ST. ALBANS — Late last week the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the U.S. Farm Bill, 234-195, thereby setting up the potential for devastating effects on the dairy industry and local farmers.

The rejection came after last-minute amendments made further changes to nutrition programs for the poor and removed the dairy price stabilization programs from the bill.

VERMONT — As summer heats up and the growing season is in full swing, groups around Vermont are stepping up their activism on an agricultural issue that is stirring up controversy around the state and around the world: genetically modified crops.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have deliberately modified DNA — scientists insert genetic material from other species to create a modified organism with different hormones, proteins or chemicals meant to do anything from repel insects to withstanding certain climates.

By Addison Independent

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s amazing bass fishing, once a well-kept secret among anglers, shifts gears with the start of the traditional bass season on Saturday, June 8, which also happens to be Free Fishing Day in Vermont.

Catch-and-release bass fishing with artificial flies or lures opened with trout season in April. Starting June 8, however, an angler may keep up to five bass in a day with a minimum length of 10 inches in most lakes. Check the 2013 Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Laws and Guide for exceptions.

Posted on May 20, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MONTPELIER — Addison County lawmakers generally gave good marks to a now-concluded 2013 legislative session that produced a General Fund budget of almost $1.4 billion that did not require the raising of new broad-based tax money, but did produce higher fees at the pump to leverage additional federal aid to repair the state’s roads, bridges and culverts.

By John Flowers

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Thursday gave high marks to the 2013 General Assembly, a body that he said granted 90 percent of his education priorities and completed one of the most productive sessions “in years.”

“It was a very productive session,” Shumlin said during a phone interview with the Addison Independent. “I thought they got more tough things done than I’ve seen a Legislature get done in a first half of a biennium in many, many years. There is a lot to celebrate with Vermonters.”
