Middlebury-area schools propose spending plans

MIDDLEBURY — Directors at six of the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven elementary schools have drafted 2013-2014 budget proposals that run the gamut from a 1.68-percent spending decrease in Weybridge to a 9.13-percent spending increase in Bridport.

Meanwhile, Bingham Memorial School directors in Cornwall have crafted a 2013-14 spending plan that features a rather ordinary 3-percent ($40,197) spending hike that will nonetheless trigger a state law requiring that the budget be fielded in two separate votes.

ACSU plans 4th superintendent search

ACSU reduces evening meetings

MIDDLEURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union superintendent will soon see a reduction in evening meetings, thanks to a new schedule endorsed by the ACSU board on Jan. 16.

The superintendent is currently accountable to nine boards, including one each representing the seven elementary schools within the ACSU, plus the UD-3 board that oversees Middlebury Union middle and high schools, and the ACSU board. This has made for a rigorous meeting schedule that ACSU directors acknowledge is hampering current efforts to recruit a new superintendent (see related story).

Reen inks two-year contract as principal of Middlebury Union Middle School

MIDDLEBURY — Patrick Reen can officially take the word “interim” off his title as principal of Middlebury Union Middle School. Reen recently signed a two-year contract to serve as the school’s leader following a search that drew 36 applicants.

Busy meeting schedule hurts search for ACSU superintendent

MIDDLEBURY — When the Addison Central Supervisory Union board next meets on Jan. 16, it will begin to discuss whether to quickly launch a fourth attempt at hiring a new superintendent or instead focus on bringing in an interim administrator to temporarily take the helm come July 1.

Some board members also promised the upcoming discussion will include a debate on what the ACSU could do to reduce the number of board meetings the superintendent must attend as part of the job.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union’s search for a new superintendent will continue after a third bid to locate a top executive failed to woo a finalist on Friday, Dec. 21.

District officials confirmed late Friday afternoon that both finalists — Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne Collins and John W. Johnson, an executive with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction — withdrew their names from consideration, citing personal reasons.

ACSU leader finalists to visit on Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — The two finalists for Addison Central Supervisory Union superintendent will spend an entire day in the district on Wednesday, Dec. 19, culminating in open-session interviews with the full ACSU board that evening.

As first reported by the Addison Independent, a district screening committee has narrowed its choices to two candidates: Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne M. Collins and John W. Johnson, director of education information services for the state of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction.

Burlington superintendent is one of two finalists for ACSU top job

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union has narrowed its search for a new top executive down to two finalists: Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne M. Collins and John W. Johnson, director of education information services for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Collins and Johnson emerged as the top two choices from among a dozen applicants in what is the ACSU’s third effort in recent months to vet and hire a new superintendent.

UD-3 board agrees on school budget with 2.7% spending increase

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school directors are poised to approve a draft 2013-2014 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that reflects a 2.71-percent increase in spending, but officials don’t want to approve the plan until they receive more solid state aid information from Montpelier.

“I think bringing (the budget) in below 3 percent still allows us to maintain our programs,” said Addison Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Gail Conley.
