MIDDLEBURY — Twenty months ago mourners at the funeral of beloved local resident Kelly Boe filled the pews and spilled out of the doors at St. Mary’s Church.

On Monday locals packed the house for Boe again. This time it was at the Addison County Courthouse, where the man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed Boe was sentenced to a substantial jail term.

Judge Samuel Hoar sent 29-year-old Nathan C. Dearing to prison for seven-and-a-half to 16 years.

Santa0300.jpg

Dear boys and girls (adults too),

I recently visited your town during its early Christmas celebration on Dec. 3 and had the privilege of meeting almost 100 children at the Middlebury Community House. It’s a terrific event I do every year, and I want to offer a big thanks to the Better Middlebury Partnership and the hardworking people who make “A very Merry Middlebury” possible. What a wonderful time I had hearing the hopes, dreams and wishes of the children who sat on my lap!

By John Flowers

CherryWood9376.jpg

SALISBURY — Town Hall Theater officials are giving area woodworkers a plum assignment using some well-seasoned cherry planks. It’s pretty straightforward; use the wood to make a fine piece of furniture or artwork, have it displayed at the Middlebury theater, and then harvest 50 percent of the proceeds once it is sold.

The other half of the sales price will go to the theater to help fortify its operating budget.

ADDISON COUNTY — Freezers throughout Addison County are packed with venison, and in many local homes that dish probably served as the main course on Thanksgiving.

That’s because the 2016 rifle season in Addison County was easily the most successful since 2005, when the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife banned shooting two-point “spikehorn” bucks during Vermont’s 16-day November rifle season.

MIDDLEBURY — Look at a child’s holiday wish list this year and you’ll be hard-pressed to find an item that doesn’t need batteries or isn’t endowed with electronic circuitry. If it doesn’t whir, ring, text, conjure explosions, rack up points or play movies, it’s probably not going to find its way under a Christmas tree.

It hasn’t always been that way.
