Bristol bookstore expands offerings

BRISTOL — “Have you ever played an instrument?” said Melissa Hernandez, proprietor of downtown Bristol’s secondhand bookstore, Recycled Reading of Vermont. “I tell everyone, you can play a song in 30 seconds.”

Black Sheep founder to launch tavern in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Local restaurateur and chef Michel Mahe on Oct. 31 confirmed his plans to open an as-yet-unnamed, new tavern in the former Jackson’s on the River space at 7 Bakery Lane in Middlebury.

Pending the signing of a lease and the construction of a 309-square-foot addition to accommodate a handicap-accessible restroom, the new restaurant would become the fourth in Mahe’s growing culinary empire. He already owns the very successful Black Sheep Bistro in Vergennes, the Bobcat Café in Bristol and the Bearded Frog in Shelburne.

Pressing ahead: Vermont Hard Cider sold in $305 million deal

MIDDLEBURY — For a company that had been “on its deathbed” in 2003, Woodchuck Hard Cider has made a remarkable turnaround. The Middlebury company now has 125 employees, $70 million in annual sales, more than 60 percent of the hard cider market in the United States, and sales growth of 29 percent and 25 percent annually in the past two years.

And, as of Monday, it is part of a global hard cider company based in Ireland.

Three pitches; three home runs

Middlebury received a bushel basket full of good economic news this week in three announcements: Vermont Hard Cider, LLC was bought by a global Irish company that will strengthen the company in its effort to stay atop the national hard cider market and expand its operations and job growth here in Middlebury; the Vermont Transportation Department announced it will finance the Western Corridor rail project without waiting for federal assistance and have it completed by 2017; and the town of Middlebury was given control of managing the railroad tunnel project that will rebuild the overpasses

Beau Ties Ltd. gets new owners

MIDDLEBURY — Ownership of Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont changed hands last week as the existing ownership group including principal shareholders Bill Kenerson and Deb Venman sold the assets of the company to a group led by David Kramer and David Mutter.

The company will remain in Middlebury and plans call for added investment in equipment and marketing with the hopes of creating significant job growth in the area.

Middlebury preps to host NCAA ski championships

MIDDLEBURY — Local merchants and innkeepers are always happy to see winter activities bring people from out of state to Addison County. But locals can expect more ski traffic than usual early next March when Middlebury College hosts the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships.

Fans, coaches, parents and alums will descend on the Middlebury area for the culminating event of the college ski season. Around 150 skiers from 20 schools across the country are expected to qualify in both Nordic and Alpine competitions.

Hannaford focus back on downtown Brandon

BRANDON — The Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain has purchased the building it occupies in downtown Brandon, which raises the possibility of store expansion and puts to rest an effort to build a Hannaford store south of town.

Land transfer records obtained by The Reporter confirm that Hannaford purchased the building and 10.35 acres on Supermarket Drive next to the Rite Aid pharmacy for $2.9 million on Aug. 2.

eCorp closes; hope for 100 jobs dashed

MIDDLEBURY — Deborah Schwarz, founder and president of eCorp English, announced Monday that she has formally closed the Middlebury business she launched early last year with considerable state aid and private investment amid promises of creating more than 100 well-paying jobs by 2013.

“I am crushed by it. It is the dashing of my personal dream,” Schwarz said of the demise of eCorp, a company she established in 2006 and then successfully marketed to state and local officials as a good fit for Middlebury.

Ralston fired up about kindling

MIDDLEBURY — Entrepreneur Paul Ralston has always had a burning desire to try his hand at businesses that depend on fire. To wit, heat has been an essential ingredient at the Bristol Bakery (which he founded) and at his current, growing venture, the Vermont Coffee Company, where the roasting of beans exudes an intoxicating aroma at its headquarters on Middlebury’s Exchange Street.
