Annual police toy drive provides gifts for 21 families

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Christmas Day completed their second annual toy drive, which this year provided gifts to 44 children in 21 families based in Middlebury, Ripton, Vergennes, Weybridge and Brandon.

Local community members and businesses donated gifts for the toy drive, which also featured the participation of the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, Vergennes Police Department and Vermont State Police. The gifts went to children who otherwise would have not found much under the tree on Dec. 25.

Vermonter spreads Christmas joy

It all happened one Thanksgiving weekend back in the 1980s after Richard Wood watched Miracle on 34th Street (as is his family’s Thanksgiving tradition). The South Burlington native latched on to what Alfred said in the movie: “Of all the ‘isms’ the worst of them is commercialism!”

On a lark, with the intention of taking on the “black” in Black Friday, Wood put on a Santa hat and headed out to the local shopping centers.

Police deliver gifts to Middlebury kids

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury resident Heather Smith wondered if something was amiss when she saw police cruisers pull into the parking lot in front of her John Graham Court home on Christmas Day.

Smith became even more perplexed when she heard one of the officers ask a neighbor where he could find her son, Logan. Logan isn’t quite old enough yet to attend classes at Mary Hogan Elementary School, so Smith knew it was quite unlikely he had run afoul of the law.

Letters to Santa

Every year, boys and girls around the world send letters to Santa in the the north pole. Here are a few that local children shared with us.

 

Dear Santa,

Since I didn’t get any gifts for my birthday can I get more presents than usual? I would like a DS, some DS games like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman. Some Wii games like Indiana and Star Wars and Batman, and Mario and Sonik, and a ripstick and a game for the Wii. It is. Maryo cart and a DS game it is Maryo. I would like some bayblades and a bayblade arena.

Season's greeting shines again

LINCOLN — Heading up the road from Bristol along the New Haven River, just west of the mountain village of Lincoln, stands a small Christmas tree in the woods decorated with lights and a star.

The mysterious tree — situated in a thick patch of forest, across the river from homes and utility lines — shines anomalously against tall stands of trees in the dark, winter night.

Toy trains transport man on nostalgic trip

MIDDLEBURY — Some people can recapture their childhood through old photographs, friends, foods and fond memories.

But Paul Bortz uses a different vehicle to transport himself down memory lane — a train. Actually, more than 500 electric and toy trains that he enthusiastically collects and shares with his family and the public.
