College honors Heinecken's volunteerism

MIDDLEBURY — Mickey Heinecken of Middlebury was awarded a Bonnie and John McCardell Citizen’s Award by Middlebury College this year for his outstanding service to the community.

After coaching Middlebury College’s football team for 28 years, he founded the Vermont Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, co-chaired both the United Way of Addison County and the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) with his wife Carol, and spent countless hours volunteering for a wide range of other causes.

Tik Root released from Syrian prison

MIDDLEBURY — Tik Root, the Middlebury College student and Ripton native imprisoned in Syria after a protest in Damascus on March 18, was released from Syrian custody on Friday.

“It is a tremendous relief,” wrote Tom Root, Tik’s father, in an email to the Independent on Friday afternoon.

Staff Blog: Sen. Leahy calls for Tik Root's release

On March 31, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) spoke on the Senate floor about Tik Root, a Middlebury College student from Ripton who is currently detained in Syria.

He said Root is a "young, curious American student" who, naturally, was interested in watching the events unfold. Further, he said that no one from the U.S. embassy has been allowed to see Root in order to verify that he is healthy and being humanely treated.

Staff Blog: Ripton's Pathik Root detained in Syria (Updated)

Middlebury College student and Ripton native Pathik "Tik" Root disappeared while observing a protest in Damascus on March 18. Syrian authorities on March 26 confirmed that Root had been jailed, and since then state officials and his family and friends have continued working to have him released.

Locals counter misconceptions in story of detained Ripton man

MIDDLEBURY — The national media has been abuzz with the story of Pathik “Tik” Root, a Middlebury College student who went missing two weeks ago while studying Arabic in Syria. Last weekend, Syrian authorities confirmed they had detained Ripton native, but have not said when they will release him.

But as they watch reports on Root’s disappearance roll out, his parents, friends and professors say there’s a side of the 21-year-old that has not been captured in any of those stories.

Syria holds Ripton man in custody

MIDDLEBURY — After a tense search, the family of Middlebury College student and Ripton native Pathik “Tik” Root has ascertained that he is “safe and well,” in the custody of Syrian authorities.

The search for Tik Root has been on since shortly after March 18, when, according to his father, Tom, he likely went out to observe the protests that were happening in Damascus, where he was studying Arabic, and was picked up by the police.

Allison voices real radio

MIDDLEBURY — When radio pioneer Jay Allison spoke at Middlebury College on March 16, the turn out was significantly larger than anticipated. After moving to a larger auditorium to accommodate hoards of eager listeners, dozens of students and community members were turned away from the free talk due to what organizers called “a fire hazard.”

College opens two new programs in Middle East

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College administration announced this month that it will launch two new schools in the Middle East in the coming years, bringing its total number of schools in the region to three.

Middlebury launched a program in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2007. Students in that program were evacuated in late January in the face of growing unrest in the country. The two new programs are in Beer Sheva, Israel, and Amman, Jordan.

Ripton's Pathik Root detained in Syria

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College student and Ripton native Pathik “Tik” Root has been detained in Syria by the authorities there since March 18, his father, Tom, told the Independent on Friday.

Tom Root said that in a Wednesday night meeting with the U.S. consul, Syrian authorities confirmed that they were “almost certain” that Tik Root was in their custody.

Forum focus at college is Japan's future

MIDDLEBURY — As Japan struggles to rebuild following the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami, people across the world are following closely the aftermath — and its implications for nuclear power worldwide.

A Monday panel discussion at Middlebury College brought in experts from the faculty to address a wide range of topics — cultural and anthropological, historic and scientific.

Kyoko Davis, a professor of Japanese studies, led off the event, speaking to the four dozen people who had gathered to hear experts speak on the issue.
