New York Times media chief to discuss journalism at college

MIDDLEBURY — Sarah Kramer, the Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning journalist behind The New York Times series “1 in 8 million” and “Coming Out,” will return to her alma mater, Middlebury College, this Thursday to share insights and experiences gleaned from her 15 years as a multimedia journalist.

Her talk, “Personal Narrative in the Digital Age,” will be the first in this year’s Meet the Press lecture series, and begin at 4:30 p.m. in Bicentennial Hall 220 on the Middlebury campus.

Middlebury College volleyball picks up three wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s volleyball team won three NESCAC matches last week at home, bringing its record to 10-3 for the season, 4-1 in NESCAC play.

On Wednesday, Middlebury fought off Williams, picking up a 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20) win.

Middlebury preps to host NCAA ski championships

MIDDLEBURY — Local merchants and innkeepers are always happy to see winter activities bring people from out of state to Addison County. But locals can expect more ski traffic than usual early next March when Middlebury College hosts the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships.

Fans, coaches, parents and alums will descend on the Middlebury area for the culminating event of the college ski season. Around 150 skiers from 20 schools across the country are expected to qualify in both Nordic and Alpine competitions.

Middlebury women's soccer posts two more shutouts

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team improved its record to 4-0 with two shutout victories on the road this week. The Panthers are now ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III.

The team earned a 3-0 victory at Colby College in NESCAC play Saturday. Rachel Madding scored the lone goal of the first half at 28:12 when she took a pass from Maddy Boston and scored on a long blast.

College celebrates 20 years of art center

MIDDLEBURY — New York has Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; Paris has the Louvre and the Place de la Bastille. Middlebury, Vt., has the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College.

With thousands of events by internationally acclaimed artists under its belt, the Mahaney Center, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year, truly can boast that it has brought a taste of those storied cultural centers to the agricultural heartland of Vermont.

Locals at Middlebury College enjoy home cooking

MIDDLEBURY –– Attending college close to home has its ups and downs. One positive, according to two Middlebury Union High School grads who now attend Middlebury College, is saving quarters.

“I can get free laundry,” said Ethan Roy, a 2011 MUHS graduate who attends college a little more than a mile from home.

Roy and MUHS classmate Katie Ritter, both 19, jokingly cited going home for laundry as a plus among many other reasons why they enjoyed going to college in their hometown.

Former U.S. diplomat shares views on Russia

MIDDLEBURY — John R. Beyrle logged thousands of miles over three decades before and during his tenure as U.S. ambassador to Russia. And it was a journey that came full circle on Aug. 17 at Middlebury College, where Beyrle delivered the commencement address for the conclusion of the Middlebury Language Schools’ 98th summer session.

Beyrle, 58, studied Russian during the summer of 1975 at the Middlebury Russian School, and he credited that experience for helping lead him toward a career in foreign diplomacy.
