ACTR nets $100K college grant

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College recently awarded Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) a $100,000 grant. These funds are a contribution toward the 20 percent local matching requirements of a $2.85 million federal grant previously awarded to ACTR for the construction of its Community Transportation Center, which will be located off of Creek Road next to the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) maintenance facility.

MIDDLEBURY — To many it might seem daunting to head straight from classes at Middlebury College to designing a business model and outreach campaign for an established business, but Allen Hoffman doesn’t think so.

For eight weeks this summer, Hoffman is working with the owners of Café Alta Gracia — a nonprofit, fair-trade coffee company — to create a new business plan for the firm, which buys and processes coffee beans from the Dominican Republic.

College museum closes for plumbing work

MIDDLEBURY — This summer, those looking for art won’t find it at the Middlebury College Museum of Art.

The museum’s sprinkler and plumbing system is undergoing significant repair work, which began in May and will continue until August, said Douglas Perkins, operations manager for the museum.

The museum, which is housed in the Mahaney Center for the Arts, will reopen Sept. 4, and the main exhibit for the fall, “China Modern,” will go up Sept. 13.

MIDDLEBURY — Speakers at Middlebury College’s graduation Sunday told the 557 seniors about to receive their bachelor of arts degrees to believe their ability to change the world.

“There is no advanced degree required for achieving the impact on children,” featured speaker William E. Strickland Jr. said. “But it does require passion, a zeal and insistence on doing things right as opposed to doing them wrong.”

Staff Blog: Yuki Takeda, whistling champion

Yuki Takeda isn't your average casual whistler. Earlier this month, he returned from the International Whistlers Conference in Louisburg, North Carolina with a third place trophy.

Takeda, a Middlebury College sophomore, has been attending the prestigious whistling conference since 2008, winning first place in teen divisions in 2010 and 2011. He competes in both the classical and popular divisions, but says his favorite thing to whistle is jazz improvization. Back home in Middlebury, he's performing with his jazz quintet at 51 Main from 10 to 12 p.m. tonight.

College refinances $63 million building bond

MIDDLEBURY — With interest rates at a historically low level, it’s not just homeowners who are jumping at the opportunity to refinance mortgages: this spring, Middlebury College also refinanced $63.5 million worth of facilities debt.

The Vermont Education and Health Buildings Financing Agency (VEHBFA), which helped the college refinance its bonds, reports that the college will see about $11 million in savings at present value, a refund of about 18 percent of the total cost.

McCardell visits Middlebury, enjoying Sewanee post

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Emeritus John McCardell Jr. is settling in well in his new position as chancellor and president of Sewanee: The University of the South.

McCardell and his wife, Bonnie, returned together to Middlebury this month for the first time in almost two years. It was quite a homecoming for McCardell, who joined the history faculty at Middlebury in 1976 and served as the college’s president from 1992 to 2004.

Lloyd to explore art and community

MIDDLEBURY — For Liza Sacheli Lloyd, director of the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College, art is all about community. And Lloyd will be putting that belief under scrutiny starting on Monday, at the first meeting of the Leadership Development Institute run by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.
