Planners balk at need for city conservation panel

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Sept. 18 meeting accepted a recommendation from the city’s planning commission that Vergennes does not need to create a conservation commission.

Specifically, planners suggested that aldermen not place an article on the city meeting ballot asking residents to approve a conservation commission, and aldermen agreed.

Bristol commission supports conservation corridor

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission at its Tuesday meeting grilled Alex Wylie, agricultural director of the Vermont Land Trust (VLT), for more than an hour about the ins and outs of proposed conservation easements along the Route 116 corridor north of Bristol.

The goal of the proposed sale of development rights is to preserve the wildlife corridor, maintain the aesthetics of Bristol’s northern gateway and ensure responsible forestry and agricultural practices.

Fragile funding worries conservation groups

ADDISON COUNTY –– While enjoying the summer, many people probably have explored the Trail Around Middlebury, scampered around Moosalamoo Mountain, hiked on the Long Trail or taken binoculars out to Dead Creek for birdwatching.

Some may not realize that these areas, and many others in Addison County, are maintained by nonprofits.

Vermont Land Trust keeps 1,241 acres of county land open in 2011

ADDISON COUNTY — By the end of this year, there will be 7,747 more acres of land in Vermont that will never be developed.

That’s the total acreage of new Vermont Land Trust conservation easement projects across the state, which includes 1,241 in Addison County. Among those who sold land were Harvey and Donna Smith, who run a diversified beef farm in New Haven, and siblings Karlene, Nancy and Randy DeVine, who sold land they’d inherited to neighboring farmers Jim and Jane Danyow in Ferrisburgh.
