Bristol officer, driver tussle at traffic stop

BRISTOL — A verbal argument between a Bristol police officer and Bristol resident David Cobb escalated to physical violence last Sunday, after Officer Josh Otey pulled over the car Cobb was driving for making an improper right-hand turn.

According to Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, Cobb questioned the officer about why he had been stopped and failed to produce a driver’s license. The two argued, and Cobb attempted to get out of his car, Gibbs recounted; when the car door opened, it struck the police officer.

Brandon police seize marijuana, tattooing equipment

BRANDON — As a result of recent raids on Brandon residences, police have seized more than two pounds of marijuana and busted a Brandon man for alleged illegal tattooing.

On Sept. 12 officers executed a search warrant at 41 Carver St., Brandon, which Police Chief Christopher Brickell identified as the apartment of 23-year-old Adam Collis and another occupant. As a result of the warrant Collis is facing two criminal charges of possession of marijuana and practicing tattooing without a license. Police also seized tattooing equipment from the residence.

Bristol forum takes aim at drug-related crimes

BRISTOL — Around 70 community members gathered at Bristol’s second crime and drug forum on Tuesday night and took some steps toward addressing the apparent rise of armed burglaries and drug-related crimes in the five-town area.

While few decisions were made, those at the Holley Hall meeting agreed to move forward by organizing steering committees around specific solutions and continuing to foster a conversation that will help determine the next steps.

Police find marijuana growing in cornfield

NEW HAVEN — On Wednesday a little before 4 p.m. Vermont State Police were notified that someone was illegally growing marijuana in a cornfield near Route 17 in New Haven.

The grow operation was discovered when the corn was being cut down. Trooper Conway reported that marijuana was growing at around six separate sites, each containing five to six plants.

Police pulled out the marijuana and took it to the New Haven state police barracks for destruction.

Police chase leads in dog shooting incident

MIDDLEBURY — Police are looking for the assistance from the public to find out who shot a dog off Airport Road in East Middlebury last Monday night.

Middlebury police received a report that Michael Breitigan was walking his dog at around 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 3 when a shot from a rifle came through the trees and struck his four-year-old Rottweiler, Bobo.

Neighborhood watch group to form in Bristol

BRISTOL — With an apparent rise in drug crime and burglaries in Bristol, and the police department understaffed and strapped for resources, residents on Bristol’s Maple Street are coming together to form a neighborhood watch group.

The first planning meeting was held last Thursday at Living Well Residential Care, which is spearheading the effort to form a watch group.

Vergennes Police Log: New Haven man cited for aggravated assault

VERGENNES — On Aug. 30 Vergennes police cited a New Haven man for aggravated assault and burglary at a First Street home in an incident that police said was triggered by a dispute over a $50 debt.

Cited was Robert Todd Wood, 41. Police said he went to the First Street residence in the Otter Creek mobile home park and knocked on the door and demanded to be let in. Police said Wood’s alleged victim first ignored him and then told him to leave while Wood tried to break into the home; the attempted break-in triggered the burglary charge, police said.

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury woman cited for domestic assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Bridgette Sunhawk, 29, of Middlebury for domestic assault, following an alleged incident in the Seymour Street area on Sept. 2. Police allege that Sunhawk struck a man multiple times in the chest.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Received a junk ordinance complaint from a Woodland Park resident on Aug. 27.

•  Investigated a trespassing complaint at a Court Street residence on Aug. 27.

Vermont State Police Log: Altercation ends with citations, one in jail

ADDISON COUNTY — An altercation between neighbors last Saturday night ended with Vermont State Police taking one Leicester man to jail and citing two others for disorderly conduct.

Trooper Star reported that on Sept. 1 at approximately 11 p.m. VSP at the New Haven barracks responded to a report of a burglary on Lake Dunmore Road in Leicester.

Bristol police call second crime forum

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has scheduled its second forum on crime and drugs in Bristol. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Holley Hall. A third-party facilitator has agreed to manage the discussion.

Chief Kevin Gibbs will start off the forum by answering some questions that came up at the end of the last meeting on July 31 and since then.
