Young area runner excels at national meet

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Middlebury 12-year-old placed in the top 10 percent of a national cross country running race in Albuquerque, N.M., this past Saturday.

Willem Landis, a seventh-grader at Middlebury Union Middle School, placed 25th at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship in the Midget division for 11- and 12-year-old boys. He covered the 3,000-meter course at Balloon Fiesta Park in 11:00.07.

Runners vie at D-II state meet; Tiger junior sixth

THETFORD — Middlebury Union High School junior Max Moulton submitted the top performance among local runners at the state championship cross-country meets on Saturday, held at Thetford Academy.

Moulton finished the 5-kilometer course in 17:59.2, good for sixth place in Division II and 23rd place among all male runners, and good for a berth in Nov. 10’s New England meet in Cumberland, Maine.

Moulton wins NVAC small schools XC title

SWANTON — Middlebury Union High School junior Max Moulton won the NVAC small schools boys’ cross-country title on Saturday at Missisquoi, and eight other runners from Mount Abraham, Vergennes and MUHS posted top-20 finishes to highlight local teams’ efforts.

Overall, the Tiger boys took third with 77 points behind Missisquoi (39) and Rice (74), followed by BFA-Fairfax (87), Milton (151), VUHS (160), Spaulding (172), Richford (179) and Mount Abe (233).

Tiger harriers host area runners at Rikert cross country invitational

RIPTON — Runners from Middlebury, Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high schools posted a half-dozen top-20 finishes at the annual Middlebury Invitational Cross-Country Meet, which was held on Saturday at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton.

The event was moved to Rikert from the Middlebury College course to accommodate the visit of the Dalai Lama, according to MUHS officials.

Eagle runners compete at BFA

ST. ALBANS — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls were ninth and the boys were 11th at the BFA Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at the Hard’ack Recreation Area in St. Albans.

Bakari Olivetti led the Eagle girls by finishing 36th at the 5-kilometer distance, while Chris Carter paced the boys by taking 43rd.

Champlain Valley won both team events, dominating the girls’ race by scoring 22 points to runner-up Burlington’s 70. The Redhawk boys edged Essex, 35-39.

High school harriers compete at Burlington Invite

BURLINGTON — Middlebury Union High School junior Max Moulton finished fourth in the boys’ race at Saturday’s Burlington Invitational Cross-Country Meet to highlight the efforts of runners from MUHS, Vergennes and Mount Abraham.

Moulton’s run in 17:19.1 over the 5K course helped the Tiger boys finish eighth among 19 teams and second among the Division II teams competing with 218 points. Essex won with 63, followed by defending D-II champion Harwood (73) in second.

Local XC runners compete in major early meet

ESSEX — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ cross-country team placed three runners in the Division II top 10 at Saturday’s Essex Invitational and finished second to Harwood to highlight efforts from local runners at the major early-season meet.

Max Moulton (seventh), Sawyer Hescock (eighth) and Malcolm Groves (10th) led the Tigers, but they could not overcome the Highlanders, who took the next four places behind D-II winner Daniel Grosvenor of Montpelier on the way to a 31-point total.

High school teams to start competing this weekend

ADDISON COUNTY — The local high school sports season kicks off — literally — with two football games on Friday night. One of the first two teams in action this fall was the last team in action in the fall of 2011.

That would be the Middlebury Union football team, a perennial title contender that reached the Division I championship game a year ago in its return to D-I after two successful seasons in D-II.
