Eagle boys' lacrosse sneaks by U-32 in opener

ADDISON COUNTY — The Mount Abraham boys’ lacrosse team won a nailbiter in its season opener to highlight weekend lacrosse action, while the Middlebury Union boys’ and girls’ teams both won on the road.

The Vergennes boys’ game at Milton originally set for Friday was moved to May 5, as was the Eagles’ home game vs. Stowe scheduled for Friday. The Commodores are scheduled to host Mount Abe on Tuesday at 4, weather and field conditions permitting.

Eagles down Slaters, 43-30, for D-II state title

BARRE — The top-seeded Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team on Saturday defeated No. 2 Fair Haven, 43-30, to win the Division II girls’ basketball title in front of a capacity crowd in the Barre Municipal Auditorium.

The victory earned the 18-4 Eagles’ their second straight D-II title in their fourth consecutive state final appearance.

No. 1 Mount Abe girls cruise into D-II hoop final

BARRE — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team on Monday took another step toward a second straight Division II title, throttling No. 4 BFA-Fairfax, 56-23, in a semifinal at the Barre Auditorium.

The 17-4 Eagles will play for the championship at the Aud on Saturday, with the opponent being the winner of a Wednesday semifinal between No. 2 Fair Haven (16-5) and No. 3 Milton (15-6). That game was played after the deadline for this edition of the Independent.

Eagle girls earn top seed in basketball rankings

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball play last week, Mount Abraham locked down the top seed in Division II, Otter Valley apparently sealed a home playoff game, and Vergennes avenged its earlier loss to Middlebury.

Saturday concluded the girls’ basketball regular season, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will release official pairings on Monday morning.

Hodsden earns D-III football honor

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School senior and Mount Abraham football player Tommy Lee Hodsden has been chosen as the Vermont Division III PRIDE Premier Player for the 2013 football season by the Vermont Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Hodsden will receive his D-III award at the Vermont Chapter Banquet at Castleton State College on April 27, and is also a candidate along with the D-I and D-II winners for the overall Vermont PRIDE Premier Player Award.

Eagles host X-C meet after upgrades to course

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country runners each finished third among four teams on Tuesday in the Eagles’ only home meet of the season.

The Eagle girls were paced by senior Natalie May, who was sixth in 22:12, while junior Chris Carter took fourth to lead the Mount Abe boys.

Eagle girls' soccer rolls past Commodores

VERGENNES — In a rivalry game between two local highs school girls’ soccer teams off to good starts, visiting Mount Abraham rode solid midfield play to a 3-1 win at Vergennes on Friday.

The Eagle midfielders not only consistently won the battles for the ball, but also set up their forwards to attack the VUHS goal, resulting in a 25-4 advantage in shots at net.

City’s civic clubs make big mark

VERGENNES — Civic organizations make a big impact in the Little City, where five secular nonprofit clubs collectively have an annual membership of more than 1,300 and make annual charitable donations of almost $150,000.

According to Vergennes Mayor Michael Daniels, the Addison County Eagles, American Legion Post 14, the Vergennes Lions Club, the city’s Masonic Lodge, and the Vergennes Rotary club do more than donate money to charity. Daniels said they are integral parts of the city’s fabric.
