MUHS, MUMS brace for a big drop in secondary students

Editorial: Embracing the big idea in education

News that area middle schools and high schools are facing a student decline of 9-26 percent over the next five years is shocking, but it is not new. Most schools throughout Addison County saw the reduction in their elementary schools many years ago and the changing demographics are just working their way through the educational system.

Two questions rise to the fore: 1) what can be done to reverse declining student populations, and 2) how can our schools adapt to fewer students and still maintain a diverse curriculum that pushes students to excel?

Middlebury-area schools to consider governance under one board

MIDDLEBURY — A committee exploring ways to streamline operations within the Addison Central Supervisory Union is recommending that residents in the seven-town school district vote on a referendum that some believe could reduce bureaucracy and create more educational equality and opportunities for students.

Specifically, the ACSU Study Committee wants to hold a vote on whether to combine some, or all, ACSU schools into a Regional Education District, known as a RED.

Accreditation team to evaluate MUHS this fall

MIDDLEBURY — As part of its periodic school accreditation process, Middlebury Union High School will host 16 educators for an on-site evaluation on Oct. 28-31. MUHS Principal William Lawson said the evaluation visit will be conducted under the direction of the Commission on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

The visiting committee will be chaired by Joseph Damplo, a retired media services professional from Wellesley, Mass. He has had extensive experience in the association’s evaluation process.

New middle school is in the works

MIDDLEBURY — While many other public and private schools in Vermont are coping with declining enrollment, the Aurora School in Middlebury is planning to add seventh- and eighth-grade classes next year in reaction to demand by local parents. School officials are currently scouting two possible Middlebury locations at which to base the new middle school.

Teacher gives local students a taste of Thailand

But to her colleagues and students at the Bridge School in Middlebury, she is simply known as “Angie.”

Free concert aims to show kids a better way

VERGENNES — Music, which is said to be the great communicator, will soon be a vehicle for social change in Vergennes.

The first-ever Youth Awareness fundraiser concert, organized by Ferrisburgh resident Jackie Rivers, will be held in the Vergennes Opera House on Aug. 19from 4 to 8 p.m.

New ANeSU superintendent grabs the reins

BRISTOL — At the beginning of this month, new Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams took hold of the ANeSU helm, replacing Evelyn Howard who held the position for 12 years.

Adams comes to ANeSU with more than 30 years of teaching and administrative experience. His wife, Judith Adams, is the assistant superintendent at Bennington Rutland Supervisory Union. The avid outdoorsman is currently renting a home in Huntington, and he has two daughters and three grandchildren.
