VERGENNES — In a 70-second public service announcement shot locally a fictional “Dr. Martin” hosts an under-age drinking party, but — like two real-life parents in the Vergennes area did in 2009 — he regrets his decision when the police show up.

MIDDLEBURY — Only a few months ago, the Middlebury Union High School’s Tigers’ Print student newspaper — and indeed, the journalism program itself — was in jeopardy of folding.

But, after the eleventh-hour infusion of a savvy instructor and 11 sharp students, the Tigers’ Print has not only continued to publish, but also has flourished with some national exposure and a new on-line edition.

UD-3 budget could raise taxes 5.9%

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board will present voters on Town Meeting Day a proposed 2010-2011 budget of $15,967,209, representing a 2.81-percent increase in spending and a potential hike of 5.9 percent in the education property tax rate.

The board made its decision Tuesday after more than two hours of debate on whether to reduce the budget’s impact on taxpayers by further cutting Middlebury Union High School and Middlebury Union Middle School programs, and/or using a substantial chunk of the district’s $512,189 fund balance for property tax relief.

More kids sit down to breakfast at school

ADDISON COUNTY — The number of Vermont schoolchildren participating in school breakfast programs is on the rise, but many school administrators and food program directors are finding that federal and state reimbursements for the programs aren’t covering the costs of those initiatives.

On average, almost 15,000 low-income schoolchildren eat a free school breakfast every day in Vermont. That number represents a 15.5 percent increase over last year’s figures, according to the Food Research and Action Center, and marks the largest percent increase in the country.

Mt. Abe faces unexpected $475,000 in spending cuts

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — An accounting mistake sent up a major roadblock for the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors this week, sending school board members and administrators back to square one to draft the high school’s 2010-2011 spending plan all while grappling with an unexpected additional $475,000 in necessary cuts.

Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Business Manager explained that an incomplete estimate in the early budget drafts put the “balance forward” number in the school budget much higher than is accurate.

OV eyes more than $350k in budget cuts

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School Board is seeking feedback from Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union-area residents at a budget forum at its Dec. 16 meeting at 7 p.m. in the OV auditorium.

At the OV board’s Dec. 2 budget-building session, board members and administration first learned the full magnitude of the budget impacts they are facing. Since October, they had been working on a plan to cut $350,000 from the current spending plan in an attempt to create a 2010-2011 budget that results in no increase in property tax rates for district towns.

ANwSU spending plans face crunch

Posted on December 7, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — When Addison Northwest Supervisory Union school board members sit down this month and look at second or third preliminary drafts for 2010-2011 school budgets, ANwSU Superintendent Tom O’Brien said they should be prepared to make some tough decisions.

O’Brien said in an interview last week a number of factors could work against voter approval of even modest ANwSU budgets this winter, including declining enrollments in three of its four schools, a projected 2.2-cent increase in the statewide school tax, and the continuing economic slump.

Declining enrollments put schools in a bind

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge and Ripton education leaders are joining a growing statewide conversation about declining student enrollment and how to maintain vibrant local schools in the face of graying demographics.

Weybridge Elementary School currently serves around 70 students this year, a number thankfully bolstered by 10 new enrollees who joined the ranks this fall, noted school board Chairman Steve Reigle. But that number could decline to a total of around 30 students by the 2012-2013 academic year, officials said.

Mt. Abe paves new paths to graduation

BRISTOL — Imagine a high school curriculum that takes a science lesson out of the lab and into nearby fields and forests, or an art class that requires students to take photos in their communities rather than in a classroom studio. Consider a physics unit that does away with textbooks in favor of rebuilding a car’s engine, or a music lesson that requires a student to build an instrument in addition to playing one.
