Sudbury man is second to die from EEE

SUDBURY — A second man from the area has died from Eastern equine encephalitis.

Scott Sgorbati, 49, of Sudbury died of the mosquito-borne disease, the Vermont Department of Health announced on Tuesday evening. He was a furniture installer who was said to be in very good health before contracting the disease and being hospitalized last month.

Sgorbati’s death follows the death of 87-year-old Richard Breen of Brandon, who also contracted EEE in August and who died Sept. 4.

Funds sought to monitor EEE mosquitoes

MIDDLEBURY — Some local and state officials want the Legislature to double the funding for mosquito control and surveillance in light of two recent cases of mosquito-borne illnesses in humans.

The revelation came at a monthly meeting of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission last Wednesday at Middlebury College featuring a panel discussion on the issue.

SUDBURY — A fund has been established at a local bank to help the family of a local man stricken with Eastern equine encephalitis who was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The Scott Sgorbati Family Aid Fund was established Sept. 7 at the National Bank of Middlebury to help the family of Sgorbati, one of two local men to contract EEE last month as the first human cases in the state. The other man, 87-year-old Richard Breen of Brandon, died of the disease on Sept. 4.

Officials seek to learn EEE lessons

WHITING/BRANDON — After lightning and bad weather forced Vermont Department of Health officials to cut short an effort last Thursday to spray pesticide over parts of Whiting and Brandon to kill mosquitoes carrying a deadly disease, they finished the job on Friday evening.

More EEE mosquito spraying planned for Friday evening

UPDATED: Spraying times announced.

WHITING/BRANDON — Vermont Department of Health officials this morning said that lightning and poor visibility made it impossible for them to fully complete the mosquito aerial spraying operation in Brandon and Whiting on Thursday evening.

Spraying of the pesticide Anvil 10+10 will continue tonight between 7:30 and 11 p.m. Officials hope to complete all spraying tonight.

Brandon man dies from mosquito bite; state to spray on Thursday

BRANDON — One man is dead and another remains hospitalized after the first human cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in Vermont were detected in Brandon and Whiting on Saturday, and state officials are on the offensive.

Richard Hollis Breen, 87, of  Brandon died Tuesday from the disease and a man from Sudbury remains hospitalized on Wednesday. Breen lived on the emu farm in Brandon where at least 16 emus died from the disease last September when EEE was for the first time detected in animals in the state.
