Opinion: Board pursuing wrong process

Posted on July 10, 2014 |
By Barbara Tomb

Are you one of the 915 Middlebury residents who voted “yes” on the March town meeting bond vote for the municipal building project?

Would it have influenced your vote at the time if the selectboard (instead of repeatedly assuring voters that the proposed project was compatible with the vision and spirit of the town plan) had revealed instead that altering the town plan to accommodate the project would be part of the process?

A more vibrant GOP voice would make Vt. stronger

Posted on June 5, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the deadline for filing for political office in Vermont nears its June 12 cutoff, the Vermont Republican party is largely missing in action. A gubernatorial candidate is yet to be named. No notable party leaders have stepped to the fore for down-party offices, and while there is talk about working to take legislative seats, there has been little action. By comparison, the Progressive Party’s filing for 21 statewide seats and offices is far more impressive and makes the GOP look weak and disorganized.

Bill Benton and April Jin vie to be next Vergennes mayor

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes voters will pick a new mayor in March, as Mayor Michael Daniels made good on his pledge made early in 2012 not to seek re-election for a fourth term.

City residents will also decide a four-way race for three city council seats among three incumbents and a former two-term alderman.

The marquee race for mayor will pit incumbent Alderman Bill Benton against former mayor and Alderwoman April Jin.

Potential gains in Senate for Dems

Posted on November 7, 2012 | Blog Category:
By Angelo Lynn

Big story still to come tonight, at midnight, is the projection for Senate gains for Democrats... and for women.

As it now stands at 12:11 a.m, Nov. 7, the Democrats have won 50 Senate seats, plus two Independents — Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders in Vermont, who votes solidly with the Democrats, and Angus King, Maine, who will be a true independent, leaning Democratic on social issues. But there are still four Senate seats in the running, and three of them are leading Democratic.

McMullen makes drug crime, tort reform priorities

Posted on October 15, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Republican Jack McMullen has perhaps best been known in Vermont’s political circles for having been unable to identify the correct number of teats on a cow when put on the spot by his irrepressible U.S. Senate GOP primary opponent Fred Tuttle in 1998.

Fourteen years later, McMullen himself is chuckling about that legendary misstep and is touting his credentials as a candidate for Vermont attorney general, a post he hopes to wrest from longtime Democratic incumbent Bill Sorrell.

ST. ALBANS — Despite his wealth and Harvard degrees, Jack McMullen says he came from humble origins.

McMullen is the Republican challenger to Democratic Attorney General William Sorrell in this November’s General Election.

McMullen’s father suffered rheumatic fever as a child, leaving him with fragile health throughout his life. As one of five children, McMullen, who is from Long Island, went to work at 11.

“Our family was — what’s the technical term — poor,” said McMullen.

Editorial: Shumlin's edge; Brock's retort

Posted on September 17, 2012 |
By Angelo

As Gov. Peter Shumlin launched his campaign last week for a second term, he focused on two themes: the state’s relative economic prosperity and that he is a governor who gets “the tough things done.”

Those ‘tough things’ have boiled down to balancing the state’s budget without raising broad-based taxes, even while coping with four major storms in 2011, and initiating health care reform by passing the nation’s first universal access health care system based on a single-payer model.

Court upholds Vergennes election recount

Posted on March 26, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Superior Court Judge Helen Toor on Thursday ruled against incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman’s appeal of her 239-238 Town Meeting Day election loss to challenger Susan Ferland.

That tally had been confirmed by a March 12 Board of Civil Authority recount, but city officials also acknowledged a transcription error that day resulted in confusion over the total amount of votes cast.
