Porter Medical Center issues energy challenge to workers

Posted on October 29, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center will enlist the help of its more than 600 employees in finding ways to help reduce its annual energy bill of almost $1 million.

At issue is Porter’s participation in a new Efficiency Vermont program that will feature some on-site workshops on what workers can do to reduce power consumption. This will culminate in a contest for the Porter employees who submit the most creative and practical energy-savings tips. Those who submit the top three ideas, as judged by Efficiency Vermont, will receive $50 gift cards to local stores.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems and International Paper Co. on Wednesday announced a $70 million pact through which the South Burlington-based utility would supply natural gas to the paper company’s Ticonderoga, N.Y., mill as soon as 2015.

The agreement, contingent on approval by the Vermont Public Service Board, calls for a 10.5-mile pipeline to be built under Lake Champlain as an offshoot of the Addison Natural Gas Project that has already been pitched to extend natural gas service south from Chittenden County into Vergennes and Middlebury.

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — Homeowners in a half-dozen Addison County towns who would like to take advantage of voter-approved Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) district provisions to help finance energy-efficiency improvements will have to wait a little longer.

But an official of the Vermont Energy Investment Corp. (VEIC), which is expected to help the 32 Vermont PACE towns administer the program, said progress is being made in what he and others say is a complex process of putting regulations and financial backing in place for the $20 million statewide program.

BRANDON — What’s the big deal with sunflowers and soybeans?

Plenty, according to Jon Satz of Woods Market Garden in Brandon. Satz spoke about the cultivation of oilseed plants to a group of some 20 people last Tuesday, at an event sponsored by the University of Vermont Extension System.

Satz added sunflowers to his vegetable growing rotation in 2009, then added soybeans the following year. He was curious about the potential for growing a crop that could be turned into oil for energy.
