VERMONT — The Vermont Agency of Agriculture recognized 140 dairy farms as “Dairies of Distinction” at the annual luncheon hosted at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex this past Thursday. Twenty-seven of those farms, or about one-fifth of the total, are in Addison County.

Community Forum: Don't just blame farmers for water pollution

Posted on July 28, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

This week's writer is Emerson Lynn, editor of the St. Albans Messenger

Franklin County has long held the distinction of producing more milk than any other county in Vermont, or New England. Dairy farmers have been to Franklin County what the Red Sox are to Boston.

There are easier professions, which explains why the average age of a dairy farmer includes a lot of gray hair, aching backs and not a lot of extended vacations.

And, increasingly, not a lot of sympathy.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Peter Welch is not among the taller members of the U.S. House of Representatives, but the Vermont Democrat can hoof it. I’ve got about five inches on him, but I’m struggling to keep up as we wind through the tunnels and alleys somewhere beneath the Longworth House Office Building.

MONTPELIER — The Vermont House and Senate agriculture committees are gearing up for a showdown over changes to the state’s flagship land conservation program.

A special study committee chaired by Sen. Bobby Starr, D-Essex/Orleans, struck all the language from a bill that passed the House in 2013. The Senate version — still a rough draft — was discussed at the Statehouse on Tuesday evening at the fifth and final in a series of public hearings.

Panton Farmland conserved Ed_Biello.jpg

PANTON — Ed and Beverly Biello were not considering conservation when they bought a home and land in Panton in 2000. Their property had scenic views of Lake Champlain with good access from Adams Ferry Road so they looked into selling house lots.

County farmers struggle with endless rain

ADDISON COUNTY — The almost daily occurrence of torrential downpours that many have grown accustomed to over the past several weeks has done worse than dampen the spirits of those who hoped for a sunny summer.

The rain is wreaking havoc on area feed growers by delaying the cutting of the second hay crop, preventing corn planting, and preventing existing crops from having proper nutrients due to flooding and the inability to spread manure, says Jeff Carter, agronomy specialist at UVM Extension in Middlebury.
