County farmers struggle with endless rain

Posted on July 11, 2013 |

corn5077.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — The almost daily occurrence of torrential downpours that many have grown accustomed to over the past several weeks has done worse than dampen the spirits of those who hoped for a sunny summer.

The rain is wreaking havoc on area feed growers by delaying the cutting of the second hay crop, preventing corn planting, and preventing existing crops from having proper nutrients due to flooding and the inability to spread manure, says Jeff Carter, agronomy specialist at UVM Extension in Middlebury.

STARKSBORO — Those who have unhappily watched the trends of young people leaving the state and farms closing up shop have reason to celebrate the launch of Footprint Farm in Starksboro this year.

Three young farmers — St. George native Jake Mendell, 25, and California natives Taylor Hutchison, 25, and Nathan Hammer, 32 — started work in April on their diversified, 9-acre farm at Starksboro’s Common Ground Center.

And already the trio says they have found a warm welcome for their mix of vegetables, flowers and animals.

Farm Bill defeat creates problems for farmers

Posted on June 27, 2013 |
By Michelle Monroe (St. Albans Messenger)

ST. ALBANS — Late last week the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the U.S. Farm Bill, 234-195, thereby setting up the potential for devastating effects on the dairy industry and local farmers.

The rejection came after last-minute amendments made further changes to nutrition programs for the poor and removed the dairy price stabilization programs from the bill.

MIDDLEBURY — Ask some young whippersnapper where milk comes from, and you might get the wiseacre response, “from a carton.”

Well, a new exhibit at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History aims to set the record straight on all things dairy, covering the past 200 years. On display at the Middlebury museum through Aug. 4, “From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England” features a mesmerizing mélange of milk memorabilia that would make Old McDonald’s jaw drop.

GMO fight continues in Vermont

By Xian Chiang-Waren

GMO small photo-2.JPG

VERMONT — As summer heats up and the growing season is in full swing, groups around Vermont are stepping up their activism on an agricultural issue that is stirring up controversy around the state and around the world: genetically modified crops.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have deliberately modified DNA — scientists insert genetic material from other species to create a modified organism with different hormones, proteins or chemicals meant to do anything from repel insects to withstanding certain climates.
