Update: Ferrisburgh teen found safe

FERRISBURGH — A Ferrisburgh teen who was reported missing Oct. 11 has been found safe, Vermont State Police reported on Tuesday afternoon.

Police located Hailey Rheaume-Fox, 17, after her mother said Rheaume-Fox had contacted her and said she was in Burlington. Police took Rheaume-Fox, who was in good condition and did not require medical attention, into custody and returned her to the Department of Children and Families.

Ferrisburgh considering wood heating for school

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh Central School officials in the months to come will consider whether to invest in a new boiler that would burn either wood chips or pellets and could save the school money in its heating bills.

According to an Oct. 8 presentation at an FCS board meeting by a Renewable Energy Resources company representative, a wood chip boiler could pay for itself in as few as four years and a wood pellet unit in as few as nine years, depending upon among other things the price of fuel oil.

Ecology classes hit the water

FERRISBURGH — An $18,000 federal grant awarded to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum will allow museum staff to offer the region’s teachers free hands-on, on-the-water training, and the materials they need to in turn offer that same outdoor ecology education to their students over the next two years.

Denu, Swift House efforts are recognized

FERRISBURGH — Among those community leaders who excel at contributing to their communities, Middlebury businessman Eric Denu was named the 2013 Addison County Chamber of Commerce Buster Brush Citizen of the Year at the chamber’s annual meeting last week. The Swift House Inn was recognized as the Business of Year, and the Community Achievement Award went to Addison County Home Health and Hospice.

The awards were presented Thursday night, Sept. 12, at the Basin Harbor Club in front of a crowd of 100.

Property taxes drop in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Thanks to Ferrisburgh’s recently completed town-wide property reappraisal, town taxpayers are looking at lower rates this tax year, by about 8 cents for homeowners and 10 cents for commercial property owners.

Town Clerk Chet Hawkins said Ferrisburgh’s Common Level of Assessment (CLA) — which measures how the town’s property assessments stack up to fair market value, according to Vermont Department of Taxes calculations — rose by about 10 percent after the reappraisal.

Ferrisburgh clean energy program is ready

FERRISBURGH — About a year-and-half after Ferrisburgh voters narrowly approved the town becoming a Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) district, Ferrisburgh homeowners may now apply for a program that could fund energy improvements to their homes with long-term loans.

The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Sept. 3 cleared one hurdle by agreeing to a contract with Efficiency Vermont to administer the PACE program for the town, pending a quick review by the town attorney.

Denecker Chevrolet eyes Route 22A parcel, move to prominent intersection

FERRISBURGH — Denecker Chevrolet co-owners Tom Denecker and Mike Capra have emerged as potential buyers of land owned by the town of Ferrisburgh at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

Denecker and Capra, whose dealership has a Ferrisburgh showroom at the intersection of Route 7 and Monkton Road and a Vergennes service center on North Main Street, met behind closed doors with the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Sept. 3 to discuss the 34.9-acre parcel. Ferrisburgh has been marketing it since September 2010 for $375,000.

Slaughterhouse updates its plan to move to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Livestock has at least temporarily put on hold plans to build a new slaughterhouse and meat-cutting facility in Middlebury’s industrial park, and is instead seeking to move those operations into an existing building in that same area.

The Ferrisburgh-based company has filed an application with Middlebury’s planning office calling for Vermont Livestock to redevelop and occupy approximately two-thirds of the 31,174-square-foot building at 183 Industrial Ave., owned by Anthony Neri.

Ferrisburgh News: School hosts film on obesity

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh Central School, as part of its commitment to the continual improvement of the health and nutrition of the community, will host a screening of “Consequences,” part 1 of the four-part HBO documentary “The Weight of the Nation” on Monday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the FCS gymnasium. The series features case studies and interviews with leading experts and with individuals and families struggling with obesity. It shows how obesity affects the nation and what individuals and communities can do.

Rokeby Museum to open new education center on May 19

FERRISBURGH — Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh will open its new Education Center and exhibit on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. The ribbon cutting celebrates a decade of planning and fundraising for the $1.2 million project. The center provides much-needed facilities, including rest rooms and meeting space, and houses the new 2,500-square-foot exhibit, “Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont.”
