Since its opening in December 2010, Vergennes Laundry has become a hotspot for locals, with its flaky croissants, tarts made with local tomatoes, fennel and other seasonal vegetables and loaves of bread straight from the oven in the afternoons.

One of the standout items on the menu is the Petits Pots a l'Absinthe, which are light, creamy, imbued with licorice flavor and topped with fresh berries. They come in small white cups with accordingly small spoons, which make the experience last all that much longer.

MIDDLEBURY — Lars Hubbard has made his living in a multitude of ways throughout the years, including as a chef, executive, entrepreneur and software designer.

He chalks up his diverse career choices to a credo he lives by: “I hate to be boring.”

And no one can accuse him of being boring with his latest plan: Acquiring (out of foreclosure) the 6,000-square-foot office building at 88 Mainelli Road in Middlebury and turning it into a distillery, cheese-making facility and headquarters for his small firm, known as The Friday Group LLC.

VERMONT — Local administrators are welcoming a move by Gov. Peter Shumlin’s campaign to free up federal funding for fresh, local foods in schools by allowing states to receive cash vouchers from the USDA instead of commodity food.

Laura Collaro, foodservice manager for the Lincoln Community School, said the choices coming from the USDA include many processed foods and things that aren’t necessarily the healthy options for children, including peanut butter with hydrogenated oils and sugar.

BRISTOL — For hundreds of years, Vermont has been a name known regionally, nationally and even internationally for its food products — butter, cheese, milk, maple syrup and apples. But out-of-state residents couldn’t get their groceries directly from Vermont.

Now that’s changing with the help of businesses like Bristol’s Graze, which delivers farm-fresh food from Vermont to homes in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

MIDDLEBURY — A Salisbury couple is seeking permission to transform the former Dundon Plumbing & Heating headquarters at 610 Route 7 south into a small brewery and trade school for aspiring beer producers.

Steve Parkes and Christine McKeever-Parkes are advancing the project, which would provide a base of operations for the American Brewers Guild (ABG) Brewing School. Steve Parkes — former brewmaster for Otter Creek/Wolavers Organic Beers — has been leading the ABG’s school since the late-1990s.

Posted on June 30, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

That’s because the Vermont Grape and Wine Council two weeks ago launched its own version of the wildly popular Vermont brewery passport program. The passport promotion plots out 21 wineries and tasting rooms throughout the state, and participants who collect stickers from at least 10 will be entered in a January prize drawing.
