Editorial: The mark of leadership

In his State of the State Address last Thursday, Gov. Peter Shumlin proposed a provocative question: “Success in the new economy depends on an educated worforce with skills beyond high school in science, computer technology, engineering and math. I ask you: Is Vermont prepared to meet this challenge? Are we ready to harness this opportunity so critical to our future prosperity?”

“The plain truth is,” he answered, “we are not.

Editor’s note: Gov. Peter Shumlin took the oath of office to start his second term as governor on Thursday. The following is Gov. Shumlin’s State of the State Address, which he delivered in the Vermont Statehouse after his swearing in ceremony.

Mr. President, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, Members of the General Assembly, members of our National Guard, fellow Vermonters:

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your governor for another term. It is an honor to serve, and every day I am grateful for this extraordinary privilege.

Who should lead Vermont's search and rescue operations?

MONTPELIER — Vermont Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry delivered a well-orchestrated message to the Legislature’s Search and Rescue Strategic Plan Development Committee last week: The Shumlin administration has determined that search and rescue in Vermont will remain under the primary jurisdiction of the Vermont State Police.

Shumlin outlines path to prosperity

RIPTON — At the annual Governor’s Lunch on Monday, Gov. Peter Shumlin outlined the five major initiatives he says are necessary to raise the amount of money in Vermonters’ pockets.

“We’ve got to raise income,” he told a group of more than 60 gathered at Ripton’s Rikert Nordic Center for the event, an annual component of the Addison County Legislative Breakfast series.

Shumlin looks to use momentum from Irene

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Jan. 5 exhorted lawmakers to attack such issues as health care reform, drug abuse and improving public education with the same zeal and creativity that Vermonters showed in rebuilding the state’s roads and bridges following Tropical Storm Irene last August.

And Addison County lawmakers on both sides of the aisle said they were up for the challenge.
