Editorial: Miller's appointment resets pledge to proceed with care

Posted on April 20, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

In an interview with Lawrence Miller last week that ran in Thursday’s Addison Independent that explored Miller’s new position as the governor’s senior advisor and Chief of Health Care Reform, there were two take-home comments that can’t be emphasized enough: that the state won’t push forward with a single payer system that puts the state’s economy in jeopardy, while also saying the state would not go back to the status quo that saw health care costs escalate annually beyond the point of sustainability.

MIDDLEBURY — Green Mountain Care Board member Dr. Allan Ramsay urged Addison County’s medical community to be patient as the state transitions to a new health care system that he acknowledged will be fraught with change and challenges.

“One of the things I’ve learned intensely over the past two years is that change is very hard,” Ramsay said at Porter Medical Center’s annual meeting last week. “It is very hard to change the system.”

WHITING — With 2017 fast approaching, Addison County residents are pressing lawmakers to estimate the cost of Vermont’s proposed conversion to a single-payer health care system. Greg Dennis: Healthcare hope — Single payer & the ACA

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

What’s the true nature of our expensive healthcare system? Is it an overregulated mess that’s crying out for free-market forces to improve quality and lower costs, by expanding competition among providers?

Or is it an under-regulated mess that’s crying out for a single-payer system to improve quality and lower costs, by eliminating the expensive, greedy middlemen known as insurance companies?

Posted on April 8, 2013 |
By Wilson Ring for the AP and John Flowers

MONTPELIER (AP) — Vermont became the first state in the country last week to let people without health insurance see how much they could have to pay to get coverage through the federal health overhaul beginning next year.

The state on April 1 released the proposed rates that would be charged for a variety of coverage levels through the state’s health insurance marketplace. The rates range from an average high of about $1,700 a month for a family to an average of $745 for catastrophic coverage — only available to people under age 30 — for a family.

Legislative Report: Two (personal) reasons for health reform

Posted on August 30, 2012 |
By Willem Jewett
