Low-cal sweetener poses hazard to dogs

MIDDLEBURY — When Karen Lykins of Middlebury woke up last Saturday morning, it was to find Lily, her three-month-old Sheltie puppy, surrounded by bodily fluids on the floor. She brought the dog to the veterinarian right away, but just a few hours later, Lily had died of liver failure.

Demand spikes for Vermont food assistance

VERMONT — Like thousands of Vermonters, Kristen Andrews turned to the food assistance program 3SquaresVT when she had exhausted all other options. In the fall of 2011 her income dropped, and the local educator and mother of four filed an application for help from the federally funded program formerly called Food Stamps.

But Andrews, a Lincoln resident, never expected the application would lead to a mistake that doubled her family’s health insurance premium. And she couldn’t have foreseen the long and arduous process of straightening it out.

Rabid raccoon bites little boy in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Public Health authorities are urging people to be aware that rabid animals have been confirmed in Addison County, and to take precautions when they see an animal that may have rabies.

This comes after a four-and-a-half-year-old boy in Starksboro was treated for rabies after being bitten by a raccoon on his back porch.

Weybridge man helps battle polio

MIDDLEBURY — Jason Schnoor in February got to witness India’s Taj Mahal, one of the most opulent and grandiose structures ever made by man.

But that elegant edifice paled in significance to another, far less conspicuous man-made creation that Schnoor and six of his colleagues dispensed to more than 130 children on a single day in India — a vaccine, doled out in simple two-drop increments, aimed at ridding the world of polio.

Bristol rallies behind Gorton

BRISTOL — Bristol Elementary sixth-grader Jacob Gorton, son of Jackie and Katie Gorton, last month was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, the cash-strapped family has received an overwhelming wave of community support.

Family friends are organizing fundraisers, have established a fund to help pay for Gorton’s treatments, and are holding a meeting for anyone interested in supporting Jacob and his family. The meeting is next Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bristol Elementary School library at 6:30 p.m.

$1.3M grant to fund new Shoreham health center

SHOREHAM — Vermont’s Congressional delegation announced on Tuesday that it had secured $1.3 million in federal funds to build a community health center in Shoreham that will offer medical and dental services to area residents regardless of their ability to pay.

Bristol school initiates free breakfast program

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of stories that look at how the numbers of local families accessing food assistance programs have changed in the past decade.

BRISTOL — For the first time, more than half the students at Bristol Elementary School meet the low-income guidelines for free and reduce-priced meals. In an attempt to stave off child hunger and rein in school finances, Bristol is offering free breakfasts to all of its students.

New hires expected to relieve shortage of doctors in county

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center is in the process of introducing seven new family practice physicians and a new Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to its roster, a move that will soon relieve some of the demand from new patients who must currently look for such services outside of Addison County.

Every Porter primary care practice in Addison County is closed to new patients, as are the two doctors’ practices that don’t fall under the Porter Medical Center practice umbrella: Mountain Health in Bristol and Middlebury Family Health.

Nurses see need for local foods at school

VERGENNES — Health care workers at the Stone Soup Conference in Vergennes last Tuesday agreed that increasing nutritious, local foods in schools needs to be a priority.

“There are some huge nutrition problems,” said Mary Gill, school nurse at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury. “They have a huge impact on students’ ability to learn.”

Beware of more ticks this summer

ADDISON COUNTY — Like many Addison County residents, Peter Grant thought he would take advantage of the recent mid-March, warm-weather spell by taking a walk behind his Bristol property off Route 116.

But roughly 600 feet down a rustic trail, Grant discovered he was taking along some unwanted guests.

“I saw some little black spots on my pants, and they were moving,” Grant said.
