Weight-loss business aims for next level

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury weight-loss business Vtrim has widened its net and is lining up clients in the national health care, military and education sectors.

Vtrim was originally developed through the University of Vermont’s division of continuing education. Vtrim bills itself as a gimmick-free, research-based program that dispenses individualized weight-loss information to participants through classes and on-line counseling from trained facilitators.

BRISTOL — An organization looking to start a clinic in Bristol and two other Vermont health care organizations that were not granted aid to create Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) last year might get an injection of funds from an unexpected donor — a health insurance company that violated state law.

Bristol Works adds a physicians' practice, more growth on the way

BRISTOL — The ongoing revitalization of Bristol’s industrial park took a big leap forward this week with confirmation that the campus will soon welcome a substantial local physicians’ practice and a new pharmacy.

Porter Medical Center officials on Monday reported that Bristol Internal Medicine (BIM), now located at 6 Park Place, will relocate this summer to a soon-to-be-renovated, 7,680-square-foot vacancy in the Bristol Works complex at the corner of Munsill Avenue and Pine Street.

Dental center boosters eye Bristol clinic space

BRISTOL — The planned move of the Bristol Internal Medicine doctors’ offices to the Bristol Works campus this summer could pave the way for a dentist to move into Bristol. The venue would be Bristol Internal Medicine’s soon-to-be vacated space at 6 Park Place, which at one point in its history hosted a dentist.

Gossens honored for contributions to Porter

SALISBURY — Gerry Gossens has collected his share of hardware and accolades for his service in the state Legislature and on the leadership boards of more than a dozen local and statewide nonprofits.

Now Gossens’ volunteer contributions have been recognized throughout New England. The Salisbury resident this month received the New England Healthcare Assembly’s (NEHA) “Trustee Leadership Award,” conferred annually on a hospital trustee in the Northeast who has made exceptional contributions to the health care industry.

Vergennes takes stock of drug abuse problem

VERGENNES — More than 250 Vergennes-area residents attended a Wednesday meeting called by Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel that was intended to spark a community-wide effort to combat illegal drug use in the city and surrounding towns.

The crowd in the St. Peter’s Church Parish Hall often applauded Merkel and other speakers at what moderator Scott Gaines of Vergennes called a “community awareness meeting,”

'Zero Hour' offers new exercise option at MUHS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School officials are hoping students will get off to a running start with their classes beginning on Monday, Dec. 5, thanks to the launch of a voluntary “Zero Hour” fitness program aimed at getting participants healthier and in a better mindset for learning.

Zero Hour is the brainchild of the MUHS Coordinated School Health Team, and is based on the premise that working out can lift people’s moods, sharpen their minds, improve their self-esteem, and help them get ready to learn.

Mt. Abe students aim to curb risky behavior

BRISTOL — Local teenagers are taking risky business into their own hands, aiming to rein in teen substance abuse and other hazardous behaviors.

After the Vermont Department of Health earlier this month released the results of this year’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) — a biennial look at everything from teen sex to bullying — a taskforce of Mount Abraham Union middle and high school students spent a day analyzing the Bristol school’s results.
