Sodbusters horseshoe pitching club moving to Bristol

BRISTOL — The Sodbusters Horseshoe Club, based in the rustic Case Street Community Club facility in Middlebury for the past four decades, will soon be moving up Route 116 to the Bristol Recreational Field, behind the American Legion.

“We are very sad to leave,” said club president Debra Brown of their Case Street location, where the Sodbusters have been based since 1970. “At the same time, I think it will turn out to be a good thing.”

Local pitchers win professional horseshoe tourney

MIDDLEBURY — Several county residents, competing with top players from up and down the East Coast, claimed division titles when the professional horseshoe pitching tour came to Middlebury last week.

Bristol’s Brian Simmons won the top prize of about $1,000 by winning the Division 1 40-foot competition in the Green Mountain Challenge. Debra Brown was champion in the Division 1 30-foot category.

Bristol teen claims world horseshoe championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Bristol 17-year-old Brianna McCormick was in the title match at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Championship on Aug. 11 and she found herself 11 points behind Heather Feavel of Wisconsin.

McCormick ratcheted up her game, started throwing ringers and earned the next 14 points.

The rising senior at Mount Abraham Union High School pulled away from Feavel and won the match 40-29, hitting ringers nearly two out of every three throws.

Horseshoe pro tour to swing into Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Step back, wind up and pitch those horseshoes because the pro tour is coming to town.

From August 24-26, a conglomeration of the greatest horseshoe pitchers on Earth will take to the clay courts at the Sodbuster Horseshoe Pitching Club on Case Street in Middlebury. Organized by Bristol resident and reigning world horseshoe champion Brian Simmons, the Green Mountain Challenge is one of six Horseshoe Pitching Pro Tour tournaments this year.

Bristol man pitches his way to world tournament

BRISTOL — Since his youth, Brian Simmons has lived, walked, breathed and thrown horseshoes.

After some health setbacks several years ago, the Bristol resident this week is heading to Louisiana to compete in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) World Championships, where he is looking to regain a world title he won twice early in the decade.
