Bristol tallies up cost of flood repairs

Posted on August 30, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When Tropical Storm Irene slammed Vermont  a year ago, Bristol wasn’t as badly marred as some Vermont towns. But large sections of several major roads were wiped out, construction projects were taken back to phase one and several old structures were destroyed.

One year later, Bristol Administrator Bill Bryant said the town’s infrastructure and finances are in good shape. He credited the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), among others, for aiding in the recovery.

ADDISON/NEW HAVEN — For most of the summer, Route 17 between Addison and New Haven will be a bumpy ride.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) began a major rebuild of the 7.3 mile stretch in early June, and is slated to finish in mid-November. The $5.8 million project stretches from Route 7 to Route 22A, and began with shaving down the top several inches of road, revealing ruts and potholes beneath.

Middlebury riverfront upgrades to begin soon

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Construction is slated to begin next month on a project that aims to beautify and improve public access to the riverfront area of Middlebury’s Marble Works complex, which fronts the Otter Creek falls.

It was last February that the Middlebury selectboard agreed to earmark $70,000 from the town’s conservation fund to improve the riverfront, a magnet for tourists seeking views of the spectacular falls. Such a project, officials noted, would also enhance the shopping experience for folks at the Marble Works and in the rest of downtown Middlebury.

NOTE: This story has been updated to correct the date of the VUHS board meeting.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board hopes to hear from the public on Monday, July 9, its opinions on a bond that could be floated as soon as November and might approach $5 million if all elements now being discussed are included.

In the past six weeks, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union business manager Kathy Cannon, school officials have begun leaning toward asking for two elements that were in early May less likely.

Vergennes to make switch to quarterly sewer billing

Posted on March 28, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The city of Vergennes will change how it sends out sewer bills. In the upcoming fiscal year, homeowners will receive their sewer bills quarterly along with their tax bills.

Aldermen at a March 22 meeting agreed with City Manager Mel Hawley and City Clerk Joan Devine that such a change in when bills are sent would be more efficient and save the city money in the long run. They also said that for most homeowners it would be easier to make quarterly payments of $87.50 rather than two semi-annual payments of $175.
