Addison County Outside: Mascoma River

Disclaimer: This river is not in Addison County. Or Vermont, even. It’s dirty, full of industrial debris, and you have to walk across busy streets to get back to the top. Out of five stars I give it half a star, and if it didn’t have one truly fun rapid it would get even less.

Clippings: Local paddlers test the waters

We’re all a little hydro-phobic after Irene. If you live near a river, if your septic system erupted through the yard or if your satellite dish is on its way to the middle stratosphere, you know what I mean. You cringe when the toilet flushes, and sleep with an inflatable dolphin.

The Great Outdoors: Otter Creek Falls

This week, another installment of paddling in our backyard: Otter Creek Falls.

Whenever we slide into the water behind the restaurant there are a few patrons who shout off the porch.

“Do you know there’s a waterfall down there?” they say, gesticulating wildly.

“What?” I say. “Really? A waterfall? How tall?”

The Great Otter Doors

Okay, so this is a little downstream of this week's section, but we'll feature it soon...

So, the Weekly Rider is "rolling on" into a broader blog dealing with The Great Outdoors more generally. You'll still get biking updates on occasion, but this week, it's paddling.  

I’ve been doing a lot of paddling on Otter Creek lately, and there’s nobody else out there. So, it’s time to go public:

There’s some phenomenal canoeing and kayaking to be had in our backyards.

You could literally paddle in the backyard a few weeks ago, but this is more figurative.
