Sports Column by Karl Lindholm: Nava not just a folk hero

Late last summer, I was chatting with Lynn and Mike McKenna in front of the Middlebury Market about the woes of the Red Sox, who were headed for last place, limping to a miserable finish.

They were waxing enthusiastic about Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava, their favorite player.

Nava is a most unlikely major-leaguer. The Red Sox plucked him from independent ball in 2008 after playing for the Chico Outlaws of the Golden Baseball League in California. The Red Sox paid the Outlaws $1.00 (that’s right — one dollar) for the rights to sign him.

I knew I had a problem when my friend Ben, from California, e-mailed me after watching “42,” the Jackie Robinson story, and being profoundly moved. He said, “Tell me again why you’re not looking forward to seeing this movie.”

True, I have expressed ambivalence. I sometimes tire of the exclusivity of the focus on Jackie Robinson. The more I have learned about the African-American experience in baseball, the more rich stories and worthy figures I have become aware of.

Sports Column: Wishing coaches the best of three out of four greats

Before every season, Middlebury Union High School Activities Director Sean Farrell asks all boys and girls aspiring to be on teams that season and their parents and coaches to attend an organizational meeting at the high school.

We meet first as a group in the gym and then in individual team meetings. Coaches introduce themselves and their athletic philosophy and address relevant practical concerns.

I have two children at MUHS who enjoy sports so I have attended 11 of these meetings so far, and likely have five more coming up.

Sports column: The pain and the joy of going the distance

Walking around the track at Middlebury College one day last summer, I ran into my friend Jon Cormier of Bristol, or more accurately, he ran by me. He was kind enough to stop and chat with me for a while, at my pace.

Turns out he was training for a race, and not a local fun run, but the “Vermont 50” at Mt. Ascutney in September. That’s a 50-mile race, up and down and around the mountain, with 9,000 feet of climbing over its route.

Lindholm Sports Column: Marco ... Scutaro: The Giants win the World Series

This past Sunday night Marco Scutaro knocked in the winning run for the San Francisco Giants in the deciding game of the World Series. Before that, he was the MVP of the National League Championship Series with a .500 batting average and a lot of big hits.

Why can’t the Red Sox get a player like that?

Oh yes, we had him for two years before banishing him to Colorado this past offseason.

Marco joined other diminutive second basemen, Bobby Richardson and Bill Mazeroski, as World Series heroes.

Men find refuge, solace in their cars

Yes, I have retired, but I am allowed to teach one course a year in retirement, so that’s what I do.

I teach my class in the late morning, and then I don’t go back to an office with a desk full of unmet responsibilities and an e-mail inbox of notes impossible to respond to adequately.

Instead, I go home and walk the dogs. Or I go to lunch with a friend.
