VERGENNES — It’s rare that scores of Mount Abraham students fill the bleachers of the Vergennes Union High School gym for something other than a basketball game.

But last Friday, hundreds of students from both high schools sat in the same set of bleachers in the VUHS gym to hear a presentation on substance abuse by motivational speaker Kevin Brooks, followed by student-led discussion forums. Meanwhile back in Bristol, students from the Vergennes and Mount Abraham middle schools gathered for workshops on bullying.

BRISTOL — The location may have been rural Vermont, but the ambiance was entirely French at the Mount Abraham Union High School cafeteria last Thursday. French music piped in through the speakers, crisp, white tablecloths dressed up the cafeteria, and students gathered to converse in French over a gourmet meal prepared by chef Bill Snell of New Haven’s Tourterelle restaurant.

BARRE — There are many reasons the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team’s 23-1 season ended on Saturday with a 44-28 win over No. 3 BFA-Fairfax in the Division II final.

Of course, the No. 1 Eagles showed talent, teamwork and chemistry all winter.

But after Mount Abe allowed a historically low 109 points in four tournament games, it was no surprise to hear Eagle after Eagle cite the same No. 1 reason after beating the 21-3 Bullets in the Barre Auditorium: “Offense wins games. Defense wins championships.”

BARRE — Sparked in Monday’s Division II girls’ basketball semifinal by mid-game tactical and lineup changes and junior Ashlie Fay’s third-quarter scoring surge, No. 1 Mount Abraham Union High School knocked off No. 4 Hartford, 56-48, in the Barre Auditorium.

In defeating the 19-4 Hurricanes, the Eagles:

•  Improved to 22-1 with their 13th straight victory.

•  Reached the final for the third straight season; this year’s foe on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. in the Aud will be No. 3 BFA-Fairfax (21-2).

BRISTOL — Ashlie Fay and Meghan Livingston each scored 13 points to lead the No. 1 Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team to a 46-16 win over visiting No. 8 Lamoille in a Division II quarterfinal on Friday.

The Eagles (21-1) took a 16-4 first-quarter lead thanks to their patented pressure defense and nine points from Fay, who Mount Abe Coach Connie LaRose described as “the engine” that powers the team. Lizzie Huizenga added three points and Jordan Emmons and Isabel Brennan chipped in two each in the period.
